Former Chariman of Selectors and Indian coach Chandu Borde has come down heavily on the curators of Ahmedabad and Kanpur wickets for coming up with the kind of wickets that they did, especially the Kanpur track, which failed to last even three days, in the India-South Africa Test series. I was truly surprised at the way the wickets were prepared in Ahmedabad and Kanpur after a tame draw in Chennai. I am sorry to say that these types of wickets are not helping the Test matches in any way as spectators lose interest in a Test match which gets over within three days,” Borde told Cricketnext.com on Tuesday. Let us be very frank about the status of Test matches in recent times. As it is, the longer version of the game is facing stiff competition from the one-day and Twenty20 formats, and by dishing out such wickets, the respective curators at Motera and Green Park are not helping the Test matches regain popularity,” he added. Preparing a wicket which starts taking unpredictable turn and bounce from Day One is just not done, as the thrill of a Test match, which is expected to last till the final day, is lost completely,” Borde observed. “In Ahmedabad we were at the receiving end as the Proteas exploited the green tinge well and at Kanpur, even part-time spinners like Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh were turning the ball on the very first day. Even though India won handsomely, the spectators did not get their money’s worth as a hardcore cricket fan would love to see action till the last day at least,” he added. Coming to the last two games, I think Sourav Ganguly was magnificent with the bat and showed that he still has lot of cricket left in him. Sourav has always been an enigma to me as he has the knack of bouncing back when least expected and along with Laxman (VVS) he has proved that there is no substitute for experience in a Test match,” Borde stressed. I think Ishant will be our main strike bowler for the future if he maintains his fitness. If he continues to bowl the way he did at Kanpur, I am sure he will terrorise the batsmen world over as his speed is bound to increase once his shoulders develop fully. Sreesanth is doing his bit and it is good to see him concentrate on his bowling while Harbhajan has regained his appetite for wickets. Piyush (Chawla) is our future hope,” he said.
