Gayle thrilled with ton

February 6th, 2009

Gayle hit three figures at Sabina Park for the first time as the hosts moved on to 352-7 at the end of the third day of the first Test against England.

The captain scored 104, including five sixes, as the West Indies moved 34 runs ahead of England by the close of play.

Ramnaresh Sarwan also reached three figures before going for 107, on a fine day for the home side.

“It meant a lot to me,” Gayle Sky Sports 1. “The last game I played here I got a pair so it’s nice to give the home crowd something to cheer about.

“Sarwan got a hundred as well, but at the same time it’s not over ’til it’s over.

“Give credit to the England bowlers, they bowled really well on a flat wicket. We stuck to the plan today. Hopefully tomorrow we can continue where we left off.

“We have only got a lead of 34. We are batting really well and would like a nice lead of 60 on this deck.”

On a slow day, runs came slowly and wickets also proved tough to come by, with Stuart Broad the best of England’s attack with 3-61.

“It was a hot day and a flat wicket and pretty slow,” Broad said. “(The conditions) are almost sub-continent-like.

“Cutters work quite well. You have got to try and deceive the batsman rather than bowl at 90mph and bowl them out.

“To keep them to under two an over all innings was fantastic.

“There are three wickets left. We’ve got to take them pretty quickly. We will set aside the first hour for that and try to bat for the rest of the day.”
