Pakistan beat proteas South Africa by 7 runs in the first semi final of T20 world cup 2009. This is the second consecutive time Pakistan reach the semi final of only T20 world cup held. Pakistan batted first and scored 149 runs. At one time Pakistan was able to score over 170 runs but the last 5 overs from South African bowler made it not possible. Shahid Afridi 50 in only 36 balls helped Pakistan to maintain the momentum along with 36 from Shoaib malik and 22 not out from captain Younus Khan.
South Africa started their innings in an impressive way. Graeme Smith was having difficulty in facing Pakistan attack, it was clear from his face that it was a pressure which he could not manage to throw away from him, instead he throw his wicket away. After departure of Smith two quick wickets of Gibbs and Devilliers. After this the required rate continue to shoot up, in an effort to bring the required run rate down Kallis was caught by Shoaib Malik on the bowling of Saeed Ajmal who is now highest wicket taker in this tournament sharing with Umar Gul, 13 wickets.
Umar Gul spell of last two overs were fantastic and did not allow South African batsmen to play even one big shot. The pressure mounted and South African default in chasing a modest total of 149. Shahid Afridi was given man of the match on his all round performance.
