Shahzad is a new centurion in ODI cricket

September 4th, 2009

ODI cricket has a new centurion Mohammad Shahzad of Afghanistan, who made 110 from 112 balls as everyone’s favourite minnows beat the Netherlands to level the current series at 1-1.

Shahzad’s score is the highest ever score by an Afghan player in a One Day International, but that’s less impressive than it might sound, given that this is only Afghanistan’s third ever ODI.

Pakistan yet to confirm NZ tour venue next week

September 4th, 2009

Pakistan is yet to settle a site for their ‘home’ one-day series against New Zealand, planned for November. Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, will convene officials in the UAE on Monday to see the sights of the possibilities of hosting the series in Dubai or another neutral venue.

“I will meet a [4-5] member UAE team in Dubai on September 7 to take a decision on this matter,” Butt told to media.

Pakistan had earlier decided to split the Tests and ODIs, with a plan to play the Tests in New Zealand, who would be the ‘away’ team. Pakistan are likely to finish their commitments with New Zealand before heading off to Australia for a Test and ODI series in December-January.

Butt had earlier discussed the issue with the UAE’s Sheikh Mubarak during his recent visit to Dubai but felt the asking rate - reportedly in excess of $3 million - was too high. Pakistan hosted Australia in Abu Dhabi and Dubai for five ODIs and a Twenty20 in April.

“I told him the rates for holding the ODI matches against Australia in Abu Dhabi in April this year were reasonable,” Butt said. “Naturally, we don’t want to incur a loss and I informed him to give us rates like that of Abu Dhabi.”

Visits to Pakistan have been pretend hold for an imprecise era following the attacks on the Sri Lankan players in Lahore this March. As a result, Pakistan has already lost their share of the 2011 World Cup matches.

South Africa now the No 1 ranked on ICC world rankings

September 4th, 2009

Johannesburg - South Africa are now the No 1 ranked side on the ICC world rankings in both Test cricket and the one-day format of the game.

That is the direct result of Australia’s failure to win their Test series against England which finished at The Oval in London on Sunday with England achieving a 2-1 series victory.

Australia now drop down to No 4 on the Test rankings with South Africa at No 1 followed by Sri Lanka and India.

South Africa’s next Test series is against England at the end of the year.

They achieved the No 1 ranking in one-day international cricket earlier this year when they won seven out of 10 one-day games against Australia in the combined away and home series.

This is the first time that any country other than Australia has filled top spot in both formats of the game. It is the first time that Australia have lost the No 1 Test ranking since the current system was introduced in 2003.

“All credit to England for putting up a great performance to win the Ashes Series against Australia,” said Cricket South Africa president Gerald Majola.

“The Proteas now top both the ICC logs for Test and ODI cricket for the first time, which puts the seal on the best ever season for South African cricket.

“This is a fitting tribute to Graeme Smith and the Proteas, whose triumphs around the cricketing world have made all South Africans very proud indeed.

“The scene is now set for an epic duel when England tour South Africa later this year which will surely push cricket’s popularity to even bigger heights.”

Smith should be fit for the start of the Trophy

September 3rd, 2009
Graeme Smith
Graeme Smith

Smith had surgical treatment in June to get to the bottom of a long-standing tennis elbow grievance.

He will miss two warm-up games against the Highveld Lions later this week but should return for another practice game against West Indies on 17 September.

“We expect him to return to full batting in 10 days’ time,” said South Africa physio Brandon Jackson.

“Graeme’s elbow is healing well post-surgery. He is in week 11 of a structured 13-week return to a full activity programme.

“He is currently batting against tennis balls and against under-arm bowling with a cricket ball, together with intensive gym strengthening and boxing.”

Smith first suffered the injury during the Indian Premier League in April 2008 but kept postponing the surgery in order to make himself available for a busy international schedule.

He played in South Africa’s two recent series against Australia, finally going under the knife after the ICC World Twenty20.

Smith has already been named in South Africa’s squad for the tournament, as well as the Cape Cobras’ squad for the Champions League in India this October.

Former England coach backs Flintoff for Ashes

June 22nd, 2009

If you believe the majority of people looking ahead to next month’s

Ashes series(http://betting.betfair.com/cricket/2009-ashes/ashes-2009-pom-baiting-begins-010609.html), it appears that England’s hopes rest on the fitness of Andrew Flintoff. If Andrew Strauss’ men are to regain the urn, they needed the Lancashire all-rounder completely injury free.

Back in 2005, Flintoff was the difference between the two sides and as much as he hasn’t been the same player since, he is still extremely important to this England team. His inclusion not only helps the balance of the side, but it adds an extra dimension to it.

Flintoff is the man that Strauss can turn to with the ball and he is the man that can inspire the rest of the team to perform against Australia. All in all, it is fair to say that England’s chances ofwinning the Ashes (http://betting.betfair.com/cricket/2009-ashes/ashes-betting-the-name-is-buchanan-john-buchanan-160609.html) are greatly improved with Flintoff in the team.

Lancashire coach Peter Moores agrees with this by saying that Flintoff ‘would make my England team’ because Strauss and co are going to ‘need experienced men like Freddie’ if they are to overcome the Aussies.

As for the situation with his fitness, Moores describes how it is ‘all about progression’ for Flintoff at the moment. He is ‘physically
strong’ according to the former England coach though and his form is ‘looking good’ as well.

This is a crucial part to Flintoff’s involvement. He needs to get some cricket under his belt before the biggest test series of them all. He could still make an impact if he came straight from the treatment room to the first test, but his form and fitness would be uncertain.

At this moment in time, Flintoff is fit and playing cricket which is fantastic news for England and bad news for Australia. If he manages to stay injury-free for the remainer of the summer (and this is a big IF), there is no doubt that he can be the difference between the two sides once again.

Pakistan could be used England as a ‘home’ Tests

May 15th, 2009

England give the proposal to the Pakistan he can use his grounds for his home series. Pakistan cricket now that the Asian nation has been declared a no-go zone on security grounds.

The chied executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) David Collier addressed on Friday  regarding Pakistan playing a four-Test series in England next year followed by a two-Test series on English soil against Australia.

Collier added: “We are one of the few countries that has a number of international grounds and they (the venues) are desperate for content.”

Miandad says IPL is a joke

May 15th, 2009
Former Legendary Cricketer from Pakistan, Jawed Miandad says IPL is a joke, but match-fixing is a serious
matter, because there is a serious possibility of matches being fixed in the cash-rich Twenty20 event.

Jawed Miandad says, “there is a definite smell of match-fixing coming from the IPL where strange things are happening, he also said “Some surprising results of matches has a witness where team have lost from winning position.”

That’s why “I don’t consider IPL as cricket, it is a joke. It is strange that players who are not regular bowlers have taken hat-tricks in the league. Teams are losing matches from winning positions,”

He said. ICC should take necessary action to take step in and check possible corruption in the event. The such kind of tournament/event should be held in the supervision of the ICC or else there will always be fear of corruption taking place in matches.”
