Its not wise to sack Ponting as captain

August 25th, 2009

Many of the cricket pundits in australia are in favour of sacking Ricking Ponting as captain. Ian Chappel and the Australian cricket board are at front among them. They think the team which played in Ashes against England was not enough competent and experienced to won the Ashes as before Mcgrath, Shane Warne and Gilchrist were the shining players due to their skills and performance Australian managed to rule the cricket world for a decade. This is the second time for England to win ashes two time consecutively.

Meanwhile, former Australian Test star Dean Jones has said Warne would jump at the chance to return to international cricket as Australian captain.

Jones told BBC Radio Five that the leg-spin legend would be a useful stop-gap while current vice-captain Michael Clarke gained experience.

“Ask Shane Warne to come out of retirement just for two years, then give it to Michael Clarke,” he said.

“A lot of people might be thinking ‘that’s stupid’ but it will take him two months, three months to get himself fit, just let him play the Test matches and, I tell you what, he would do it in a heartbeat.

“I don’t think they’ll do that, I don’t think they’ll go that far but it’ll be an option, I tell you, that’ll be looked at,” Jones added

Ponting, who is 34, is set to return to Australia for a short break before returning towards the end of the one-day international series against England.

Stuart Broad put England in control

August 21st, 2009

Stuart Broad sensational five-wicket burst on the second day of the final fifth Test against Australia at the Oval here on Friday, put England at driving position to regain Ashes.

Broad took five wickets for 27 runs in 12 overs to remove Shane Watson, captain Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin. The Australia was bowled out for only 160.

Off-spinner Graeme Swann provided fine support with four for 38 as Australia suffered their third first innings collapse this series.

That left England, who made 332 in their first innings, 172 runs in front and by stumps they had extended their lead to 230 after closing on 58 for three with three more days still scheduled in the match.

Australia left-arm quick Mitchell Johnson, with the aid of two catches at short leg by Simon Katich, removed England first innings top-scorer Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood, who again fell cheaply.

But England captain Andrew Strauss was 32 not out and Test debutant Jonathan Trott unbeaten on eight.

Flintoff is the main focus in Ashes decider

August 17th, 2009

Flintoff is top priority for selectors in the decider agaisnt Australia in current Ashes. Flintoff is suffering from knee injury which is still not recovered yet and selectors are keen to his inclusion to take the maximum benefits out of him. Does Flintoff fit for this big job?

Flintoff has been included in three England one-day squads picked to cover the seven-match 50-over one-day series against Australia, October’s Champions Trophy in South Africa, a one-off warm up match in Belfast next week as well as two Twenty20 internationals, also against Australia, over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

It means Flintoff will head straight from retirement as a Test cricketer into his new life as a one-day specialist, even though it was admitted recently that he may need surgery on his right knee.

A lot will depend on how Flintoff fares at the Oval this week on what will be an emotional occasion for him and a high-pressure one for the England team.

The selectors are stating clearly that Flintoff cannot choose his own England schedule. “Andrew Flintoff has stated he is going to retire form Test cricket, so one-day cricket is where he is going to go, so we are hoping he can play as many games as possible because that is what he has designated himself,” said Geoff Miller, the national selector. “We are trying to build up a squad and side so people are comfortable with where they play. If we have to monitor him match by match we will do that, but he is an integral part of our side.”

Flintoff fit for Ashes decider

August 11th, 2009

Flintoff the sign of Ashes success is fit enough to take part in the final test of Ashes series 2009. He sat out the fourth Test, the board said. England lost by an innings and 80 runs to leave the best-of-five contest tied at 1-1. He is suffering from knee injury and according to board of cricket, he will take part in decider.

Flintoff, the man of the series in the 2005 Ashes, lifted England to victory in the second Test by taking five wickets for 92 on the final morning and then top scored for his team with 74 in the drawn third Test. He was only ruled out of the fourth Test hours before the start of play.

Flintoff availability must worry Ricky Ponting squad as during his absence English cricket is easy to dominate in test cricket.

Brilliant tail enders act as wall against Aushies

July 12th, 2009

What a match it was, brilliant start by England then Australian dominancy in batting and total control of the match in last days, the victory was an inch away but the last pair defy. It was a great match saving display by English batsmen. The Australian stunned in the ground when the last ball was bowled, they must miss there Mcgrath and shane Warne.

England’s joy, after finishing the game on 252 for nine, was Australia’s frustration and afterwards their captain, Ricky Ponting, complained that England had stretched the spirit of the game by twice sending on 12th man Bilal Shafayat with spare gloves for Anderson – a classic time-wasting ploy. Ponting has whinged before about England using 12th men for sharp practice (remember Gary Pratt at Trent Bridge), but in similar circumstances most teams would have pushed their luck.

Ricky Ponting must be an unlucky this time which may create pressure on its side in comming matches.

June 29th, 2009

Ashes series is about to begin, both the teams are preparing and finalizing their plans but every body is looking into the role of Flintoff. The Ashges series which was played in Australia, England got humiliating defeat of 5-0. Flintoff  performance can play a major role in this series, he is a man to mark by Australians.

It was tough for a while afterwards but that is a long way off and there have been a lot of things happen in my life since 2006,” Flintoff told reporters on Monday.

Former England coach backs Flintoff for Ashes

June 22nd, 2009

If you believe the majority of people looking ahead to next month’s

Ashes series(http://betting.betfair.com/cricket/2009-ashes/ashes-2009-pom-baiting-begins-010609.html), it appears that England’s hopes rest on the fitness of Andrew Flintoff. If Andrew Strauss’ men are to regain the urn, they needed the Lancashire all-rounder completely injury free.

Back in 2005, Flintoff was the difference between the two sides and as much as he hasn’t been the same player since, he is still extremely important to this England team. His inclusion not only helps the balance of the side, but it adds an extra dimension to it.

Flintoff is the man that Strauss can turn to with the ball and he is the man that can inspire the rest of the team to perform against Australia. All in all, it is fair to say that England’s chances ofwinning the Ashes (http://betting.betfair.com/cricket/2009-ashes/ashes-betting-the-name-is-buchanan-john-buchanan-160609.html) are greatly improved with Flintoff in the team.

Lancashire coach Peter Moores agrees with this by saying that Flintoff ‘would make my England team’ because Strauss and co are going to ‘need experienced men like Freddie’ if they are to overcome the Aussies.

As for the situation with his fitness, Moores describes how it is ‘all about progression’ for Flintoff at the moment. He is ‘physically
strong’ according to the former England coach though and his form is ‘looking good’ as well.

This is a crucial part to Flintoff’s involvement. He needs to get some cricket under his belt before the biggest test series of them all. He could still make an impact if he came straight from the treatment room to the first test, but his form and fitness would be uncertain.

At this moment in time, Flintoff is fit and playing cricket which is fantastic news for England and bad news for Australia. If he manages to stay injury-free for the remainer of the summer (and this is a big IF), there is no doubt that he can be the difference between the two sides once again.

Steve calls for Harm-ony

January 6th, 2009
Steve Harmison
Steve Harmison

England paceman Steve Harmison has called for coach Peter Moores and skipper Kevin Pietersen to sort out their problems before they rip the team apart.

Moores and Pietersen are thought to have suffered a breakdown in their relationship, and crisis talks are set to take place once the skipper returns from holiday later in the week.

With the Ashes coming up this year, after a tour to the West Indies, Harmison says that any problems between the pair need to be sorted out as soon as possible.

The future of Moores in particular has been placed in doubt by many pundits, with the ECB likely to side with their skipper and talisman if forced to take sides.

With just over a fortnight until England fly out to the Caribbean, some resolution has to be agreed upon sooner rather than later.

Durham paceman Harmison says that the pair need to think of the team above their own concerns, and sort out their differences quickly one way or the other.

“They have got to get their heads together and have a chat and sort out the issues,” said Harmison.

“It’s about the England cricket team - not Peter Moores or Kevin Pietersen.

“If there is a problem it needs to be sorted sooner rather than later.”
