Lee Is Targeting The ODI Series Against Pakistan In April

February 16th, 2009

Australian fast bowler Brett Lee is recovering from his injury faster than expected and is set for an early comeback to international cricket in the one-day series against Pakistan in April.

Sidelined with stress fractures in his foot since early last month, 32-year-old Lee was initially expected to return in the World Twenty20 to be held in England in June.

But with his rehabilitation ahead of schedule, Lee is targeting the five-match one-day series against Pakistan in United Arab Emirates.

He is planning to run in the next fortnight and bowl by mid-March after having a surgical boot removed last week.

“The good news is the healing is two weeks ahead of schedule. There’s no need to rush Brett, but it looks like he will be available for selection for the Pakistan one-dayers, that’s the target,” Lee’s agent Neil Maxwell said.

“It’s better than where he should be and Brett is really pumped. The most encouraging sign is that he said to me the other day, ‘I’ve never been more excited about playing cricket’,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by ‘Sunday Telegraph’.

Should Lee not be available for the Pakistan series, he will be encouraged by Cricket Australia to play in the latter stages of the Indian Premier League.

CA physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Lee could benefit with a stint in the IPL, which concludes two weeks after the one-day series against Pakistan.

“Brett might play in the IPL because it might fit in with our time frame. We’d probably like him to play the latter part of the IPL because it will give him some cricket before he plays in the World Cup.

“He’s going really well. I saw him last week and he’s making good progress. At the moment, he’s doing a lot of strength work and he will be cleared to start running in a couple of weeks,” Kountouris said.

New Zealand 270 (A J Redmond 83, B Lee 4-66) & 203 (B B McCullum 84 no, B Lee 5-105) v Australia 535 (B J Haddin 169, M J Clarke 110, R T Ponting 79, M E K Hussey 70)
Australia beat New Zealand by an innings and 62 runs

Brett Lee took five wickets as Australia dismissed New Zealand for 203 to win the second Test in Adelaide by an innings and 62 runs, claiming a 2-0 series whitewash in the process.

Lee finished with second innings figures of 5-105 as the tourists succumbed shortly after tea on day four at the Adelaide Oval.

New Zealand resumed on 35-0, but Lee set the tone for a day of Australian domination as he removed Aaron Redmond (19) with just his second delivery of the morning as Michael Clarke held on to a catch at point.

The paceman then ripped through the Black Caps top order as he took care of Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor and Jamie How.

Ryder offered a simple chance to Andrew Symonds at cover, Taylor got a leading edge to present Lee with a regulation caught and bowled, while How (28) headed back to the pavilion after a stunning full-length diving catch by Ricky Ponting in the slips.

Mitchell Johnson then weighed in with the first of his three wickets as Daniel Flynn played across the line and the left-armer didn’t have to wait long for his second as he bowled Peter Fulton after the lunch break.

The one man to offer any resistance for New Zealand was Brendon McCullum who went on to make an impressive unbeaten 84 which included 14 boundaries and two sixes.

However, while the wicketkeeper did his best to shepherd the New Zealand tail, he was offered precious little support as wickets continued to tumble at the other end.

Daniel Vettori did threaten to steady the ship with McCullum as he frustrated the hosts with a knock of 13, but his innings came to an end when off-spinner Nathan Hauritz managed to turn one out of the footmarks to have the New Zealand skipper caught at slip by Matthew Hayden.

Tim Southee mustered 11 before he fell in a similar fashion, although this time it was Ponting doing the honours at slip.

The tourists did reach tea some 98 runs adrift at 167-8 and remarkably McCullum went on to post a 50 partnership with Ian O’Brien without the number ten batsman contributing a single run.

But Lee returned to eventually end O’Brien’s defiance and Johnson wrapped up victory as he bowled Chris Martin who predictably ended with his second duck of the match.

The New Referral system in Cricket

July 28th, 2008

Brett Lee, Australia, Referral system, Cricket, Umpire

Australian pace spearhead Brett Lee on Monday gave a thumbs down to the newly-introduced umpire referral system saying it should not be used for deciding leg-before dismissals and the system, which allows each team three unsuccessful referrals against on-field umpire`s decisions is on trial in the ongoing Test series between India and Sri Lanka. The system has evoked mixed reaction from players with some saying that it has helped the game become error-free while others criticising it for eroding the on field umpire`s authority and slowing down matches. Lee felt it takes away the element of human error which makes cricket an intriguing sport. It`s good for stumping and run outs but I believe the human element should always be there. For leg before decisions I like the on-field umpire to take the call and I think most times they do get it right,” Lee said. The Australian pace spearhead has been on a high for the past several months, earning back-to-back man of the series awards in the Test series against Sri Lanka and West Indies and completing 300 wickets in the longer version of the game his red hot form earned him rich praise from West Indies great Viv Richards, who put him in the same bracket as Caribbean legends like Joel Garner and Michael Holding. Lee said he was humbled by Richards praise. It was a great feeling… to be praised by somebody like him is certainly special. Those were lovely comments that Viv made and I felt humbled he said. Away from cricket Lee shot for his maiden Bollywood movie `Victory` and said it was not all that tough as he just had to play himself in the movie that also stars newcomer Harman Baweja and Amrita Rao. Shooting for Victory was a very good experience. We had fun on the sets. Harman was a nice co-star and it was a great experience working with him he said and the 31 year old pacer also has plans to release a music album soon.
