Wasim Bari appointed new PCB chief

September 8th, 2009

KARACHI — Former national captain Wasim Bari has been appointed chief operating officer of Pakistan’s cricket board, the organisation announced Tuesday, replacing sacked former fast bowler Salim Altaf. The appointment of 61-year-old Bari, currently director of human resources, comes after Altaf was sacked earlier this month, apparently because of differences with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt.

“The governing board of the PCB… has appointed Bari as chief operating officer of the PCB with immediate effect,” said a PCB press release.

Bari said he would do his best to lift the image of Pakistani cricket, tainted by security fears and a number of scandals.

“Pakistan cricket has suffered badly, but we are trying our level best to lift it and we will do it with the best of efforts,” he told to media.

“This new post is a great challenge for me. I will do my best to work for the promotion of the game in Pakistan. I like working together and with consensus, that is my principle,” he added.

Bari played 81 Tests and 51 one-day internationals in 1960s and 70s, and also served as chairman of selectors as recently as 2007. He was appointed interim chief selector from June to August this year.

Altaf, who was the right hand man of Butt when the new board took over in October last year, accused the chairman of running the PCB as a one-man show.

Altaf’s sacking was the latest twist in Pakistan’s unending saga of controversies in the game.

Pakistani cricket has been embroiled in scandals ranging from doping controversies and disciplinary problems to public disputes between officials and match-fixing allegations.

Foreign teams have also been shunning tours to Pakistan over security fears in a nation battling a Taliban insurgency.

Two major events — the Champions Trophy and World Cup 2011 matches — were moved out of Pakistan because of safety jitters.

Smith should be fit for the start of the Trophy

September 3rd, 2009
Graeme Smith
Graeme Smith

Smith had surgical treatment in June to get to the bottom of a long-standing tennis elbow grievance.

He will miss two warm-up games against the Highveld Lions later this week but should return for another practice game against West Indies on 17 September.

“We expect him to return to full batting in 10 days’ time,” said South Africa physio Brandon Jackson.

“Graeme’s elbow is healing well post-surgery. He is in week 11 of a structured 13-week return to a full activity programme.

“He is currently batting against tennis balls and against under-arm bowling with a cricket ball, together with intensive gym strengthening and boxing.”

Smith first suffered the injury during the Indian Premier League in April 2008 but kept postponing the surgery in order to make himself available for a busy international schedule.

He played in South Africa’s two recent series against Australia, finally going under the knife after the ICC World Twenty20.

Smith has already been named in South Africa’s squad for the tournament, as well as the Cape Cobras’ squad for the Champions League in India this October.

South Africa squad missing Morkel for champions trophy

August 21st, 2009

South Africa has announced its squad for comming crciket champion trophy and amazingly left out Morkel from the squad. Morkel is considered as match winning and strength of the team but he burst on the national scene in 2006/07, paid the price for inconsistent performances last season.

The left-arm fast bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe returned to the national team for the first time since undergoing a cartilage operation on his right knee in March. Tsotsobe took four for 50 in his only one-day international against Australia in Perth in January.

Tsotsobe, 25, joined Wayne Parnell, 20, as one of two promising left-arm pace bowlers in the squad. Parnell was one of the outstanding performers in the World Twenty20 in England in June.

Left-arm spin bowler Robin Peterson also gained a recall.

“There were some difficult choices to make,” said selection convener Mike Procter.

“At the moment South African cricket is blessed with an abundance of fast bowling talent with the emergence of Tsotsobe and Parnell as outstanding new prospects and Charl Langeveldt becoming available again.

“Langeveldt is not fit enough yet to be considered after his shoulder surgery and Morne Morkel is the unlucky one to miss out. He is very much part of our long-term planning and has a major role to play but we would like to see more consistency from him at this stage,” said Procter.

Procter said one of the strengths of the team was that there were numerous options, with four spin bowlers, two all-rounders in Jacques Kallis and Albie Morkel as well as a strong pace attack.

“There is also batting potential most of the way down the order.”

The Champions Trophy will be played at two venues, Centurion and Johannesburg, from September 22 to October 5. Following is the final squad of South African team.

South African squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Johan Botha (vice-capt), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Makhaya Ntini, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Roelof van der Merwe.

Shoaib Akhtar Back in the National Squad

August 6th, 2008

Shoaib Akhtar, PCB, Champions Trophy, Pakistan, Shahid AfridiPakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar back in the national squad for next months Champions Trophy and sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board PCB said Wednesday that the national selectors wanted to judge for themselves whether Shoaib is fully match fit by watching him in action during the three practice games at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Which were supposed to be played from Aug 5-9 but the opening game was washed out the other day and according to forecasts, heavy monsoon rains are expected in Lahore during the rest of the week putting a question mark on the other two games to be played Aug 8 and 10 and the problem for Pakistan is that Shoaib is not the only key player with doubts over his fitness. Umar Gul, too, is yet to prove his match fitness while senior all rounder Shahid Afridi and left-handed opener Salman Butt are also plagued with fitness problems. The national selection committee has to finalise Pakistan`s 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy by Aug 11 a day before the International Cricket Council ICC deadline for submission of final squads for the eight-nation tournament to be played from Sept 12-28. The four players including Shoaib will be drafted in the Pakistan team subject to fitness. The Champions Trophy is still around five weeks away and the players will have plenty of time to prove whether they are match fit said a source pointing that the PCB might arrange for practice games later this month if the Lahore matches as disrupted by rain. Shoaib 32 has not played for Pakistan since featuring in the fourth one-dayer against India in Gwalior last November. Since then he has been out of international action because of injury problems or suspension due to disciplinary breaches. Pakistan are eager to have him back in the team after they flopped in the Asia Cup at home earlier this summer. Their toothless bowling attack was blamed for Pakistans defeat in the 6-nation tournament.

The players have to understand and Realise Inzamam

July 29th, 2008

Champions Trophy, players, Inzamam ul Haq, Security

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq on Tuesday offered to talk to players considering a boycott of Septembers Champions Trophy saying he would help to allay their security concerns and the International Cricket Council ICC announced last week that the tournament would stay in Pakistan prompting fears of a boycott by non-Asian countries which opposed the decision. If a player has any concern I am happy to talk to them Inzamam who retired from international cricket last year told reporters as someone who has played at the highest level I would never advise cricketers to put their lives or careers at stake. But I firmly believe Pakistan is a safe place to play cricket and the players should trust the ICC the PCB Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan government he said. Defending champions Australia along with New Zealand and England, have expressed doubts over security arrangements for the September 11-28 tournament with players associations urging a boycott but Inzamam said any pull-out would be damaging not just for Pakistan but also for world cricket. The players have to understand and realise that if they pull out it will not help the cause of cricket, it may devalue an important tournament and stop the development process in Pakistan he said. Pakistan is a sport loving country and by pulling out they will be denying the opportunity to millions of local supporters who want to see them in action said Inzamam, who played 120 Tests and 378 one-dayers for Pakistan. Inzamam hailed the ICC`s decision and said outside perceptions of Pakistan formed by news reports of bombings and Islamic militant violence could be deceptive. There are always two sides to the picture and I think the players need to see the other side of the picture to get to the bottom of the reasons for these acts of violence. They are not attempted or targeted at cricketers he said. In the past domestic competitions have been played during those tough times and never has a cricketer or a sportsman been affected by them. He added that the ICC has shown great support for Pakistan and has proved they did not want to isolate a country which has been deprived of some valuable cricket in recent past. The ICC has appointed a task force to ensure that Pakistan implements a full security plan for the biennial event regarded as cricket`s second major tournament after the World Cup. Former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed said he was ready to offer advice to any international waverers. A player understands another player`s language so I am ready to convince players from England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa that it is safe to play cricket in Pakistan. No one is going to target cricket said Mushtaq and I think the whole world is quite unsafe compared to maybe seven years ago. But that doesn`t mean that we should stop our routine lives the show must go on and it is the responsibility of everyone to beat terrorism he added.
