West Indies set 330 to chase for Australia

December 7th, 2009

West Indies have set Australia 330 runs to chase on the last day in the second cricket Test at Adelaide Oval. Thanks to Chris Gayle who was not out at 165 and carried the bat.

The West Indies batsmen added 33 runs in the first partial half on the final day before losing the last two wickets to be all out for 317, leaving Australia about 80 overs to play and chase.

Captain Chris Gayle remained unbeaten on 165 - the only West Indian skipper to carry his bat in a Test innings.

Australian quick Mitchell Johnson claimed five wickets for the innings and fellow paceman Doug Bollinger finished with 3-50.

The Windies resumed on 8-284 and Johnson (5-103) struck first on the last day by bowling Ravi Rampaul for 14.

No.11 Kemar Roach was the final batsman dismissed, caught by Ricky Ponting at slip from Bollinger’s bowling for eight.

Australia must defy a century of history to triumph, with no team scoring more than 239 runs in a fourth winnings to win an Adelaide Oval Test in more than 100 years.

The delicately balanced second Test was threatened by heavy morning and overnight rain in Adelaide, but the showers halted before play and the weather bureau has forecast the rain to clear during the day.

The Australians lead one-nil in the three Test series with the final match to be played in Perth from December 16.

Gayle said in an interview that he has the respect and support of his players and will not run away from the captaincy.

When you have a defeat like recent, it’s to be expected that a lot of folk are going to give negative remarks on my  captaincy. Some say I’m not the right person for the job. I’ve got a message for those people - I’m not going anywhere. My heart is in it and I feel really strongly that I am the right man to lead the West Indies through this challenging period,”Gayle writes.

In short I am not running away from this job and will continue my position with full heart and determination.

Gayle make holes in Australian hopes

June 6th, 2009

Chris Gayle the West Indian captain showed no mery to Australian bowlers and helped his country to win a first Twentywo world cup match against bigger side Australia. Gayle score 88 with six big sixers and 6 fours in only 50 balls.

Earlier Australia batted first and posted 169 runs on the board. West Indian poor fielding allowed Australian to post a moderate total otherwise the West Indian bowler never allowed opponent batsmen to hit ball freely. Australian came under pressure at the start of the innings when watson and Ponting were out for duck. Later some good strokes from Warner and lower middle order gave some hope top Australia.

When Gayle and Fletcher batted they both keep the bowlers at bay and played their stroikes freely to all the sides of ground. Gayle hammered 6 sixes and 6 fours in his match winning innings. The most expensive bowler from Australia was Brett Lee who conceded 56 runs in his 4 overs quota.

Australian loss to West Indian put into Australia in a difficult situation as this groups is killer group having Srilankan the otherside. Three top team of the world in one group as compare to other gorups where the top ranking teams have one baby team in a group. If all teams in this group will win one match each then the qualifying  to second round will depend on run rates, here again Australia have disadvantage because of early finish by West Indies.

Ravi Bopara struck his maiden century Heap up 600-6dec

February 28th, 2009

Ravi Bopara struck his maiden century and Paul Collingwood hit 96 as England piled up 600-6 declared against West Indies on day two on Friday of the fourth Test at Kensington Oval.

West Indies lost captain Chris Gayle cheaply but responded strongly to post 85-1 at the close.

The in-form Ramnaresh Sarwan was unbeaten on 40 with opener Devon Smith on 37 not out.

Bopara, a late replacement in the squad, helped press home England’s advantage with 104 after the tourists resumed on 301-3.

The Essex batsman, in only his fourth Test, took advantage of an early life to blast nine fours and a six off 143 balls.

“It’s nice. I felt pretty confident from the time I went out there,” Bopara said. “I’m happy with that and hopefully I can build from there.”

Collingwood just missed out on a ton after a fluent innings that spanned 159 deliveries and was decorated with 12 boundaries in nearly four hours.

Wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose hit a boisterous, unbeaten 76 as he grabbed the chance presented to him by the absence of Matt Prior on paternity leave.

Fidel Edwards was the pick of the West Indian bowlers although his figures of 3-151 did not do him justice.

Bopara arrived in the Caribbean only on Saturday as cover for the injured Andrew Flintoff but hit a century in the warmup match last weekend and was included here for his first Test since December 2007.

“I didn’t think that I wouldn’t get the opportunity again, I thought one day my opportunity would come,” Bopara said. “I think the only thing that played on my mind was that I had to take my opportunity the next time it came and I’d like to think that I have.”

Edwards gave West Indies a good start to the day when he removed Pietersen for 41 at 318-4. England’s premier batsman, overnight 32, was blatantly leg before wicket as he played across the line. Pietersen challenged Russell Tiffin’s verdict but third umpire Daryl Harper confirmed the decision.

Edwards should have made further inroads in the next over but Bopara’s ill-controlled hook was spilled by Jerome Taylor running in from deep square leg.

That chance was the third off Edwards’ bowling following two misses on day one.

Edwards continued to pepper Bopara with the short ball and he engaged in an absorbing battle with the Barbadian fast bowler.

He top-edged one just off the fingertips of leaping substitute Sharmarh Brooks on the boundary for six and then was hit in the grille of the helmet as he missed another hook.

“He did come back at me, getting me on the grille. But it sort of fired me up,” Bopara said. “I thought, well, that’s his weapon, his bouncer’s his weapon and if I attack his weapon, he’s not got much else.”

Bopara survived the threat and added 149 for the fifth wicket with Collingwood either side of tea to solidify England’s position of strength.

Collingwood, who crossed 3,000 runs when he reached 19, seemed set for a second successive hundred until he skewed an ambitious drive out to deep point where Brendan Nash pouched a simple catch.

West Indies continued its butterfingered display in the field when Ambrose, yet to score, was dropped off his third ball by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin off Ryan Hinds’ left-arm spin.

Bopara and Ambrose then produced a scintillating partnership of 113 off 130 deliveries against a wilting home team attack.

Bopara passed three figures just after tea, celebrating in Usain Bolt style, before he fell to a deserving Edwards as he skied a hook.

Captain Andrew Strauss declared once England notched 600, leaving West Indies an hour and three quarters to negotiate.

Anderson claimed Gayle lbw for 6 but only after Tiffin’s original not out verdict was challenged and overruled by Harper.

But Smith and Sarwan played some fine strokes in a counterattacking stand of 72 off 130 balls to keep England at bay

Gayle thrilled with ton

February 6th, 2009

Gayle hit three figures at Sabina Park for the first time as the hosts moved on to 352-7 at the end of the third day of the first Test against England.

The captain scored 104, including five sixes, as the West Indies moved 34 runs ahead of England by the close of play.

Ramnaresh Sarwan also reached three figures before going for 107, on a fine day for the home side.

“It meant a lot to me,” Gayle Sky Sports 1. “The last game I played here I got a pair so it’s nice to give the home crowd something to cheer about.

“Sarwan got a hundred as well, but at the same time it’s not over ’til it’s over.

“Give credit to the England bowlers, they bowled really well on a flat wicket. We stuck to the plan today. Hopefully tomorrow we can continue where we left off.

“We have only got a lead of 34. We are batting really well and would like a nice lead of 60 on this deck.”

On a slow day, runs came slowly and wickets also proved tough to come by, with Stuart Broad the best of England’s attack with 3-61.

“It was a hot day and a flat wicket and pretty slow,” Broad said. “(The conditions) are almost sub-continent-like.

“Cutters work quite well. You have got to try and deceive the batsman rather than bowl at 90mph and bowl them out.

“To keep them to under two an over all innings was fantastic.

“There are three wickets left. We’ve got to take them pretty quickly. We will set aside the first hour for that and try to bat for the rest of the day.”

Pakistan make clean sweep against Windies

November 17th, 2008
Shoaib Malik
Shoaib Malik

ABU DHABI: Roa Iftikhar returned career-best bowling figures while Younus Khan struck a brilliant hundred to guide Pakistan to a 31-run win over the West Indies in the third and final one-day here on Sunday.

Iftikhar took 4-59 to foil a fighting 122 by Chris Gayle as the West Indies, chasing 274 to win, were bowled out for 242 in 46.3 overs to give Pakistan a 3-0 win at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Pakistan won the first match by four wickets and the second by 24 runs.

Gayle fought a lone battle in the lost cause, hitting his second century in the series, but other than him only Ramnaresh Sarwan (62) put up any resistance as Pakistani bowlers led by Iftikhar exploited the conditions well.

The 27-year-old Iftikhar broke the Gayle-Sarwan second-wicket stand of 151 to revive Pakistan’s chances, trapping Sarwan in the 33rd over and then dismissing Shivnarine Chanderpaul (three) and Xavier Marshall (nought) in his next.

Gayle, who hit 113 in the first match, was lucky to reach his 18th one-day hundred after television replays showed he edged one from Iftikhar to wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal on 99 but was ruled not out.

Gayle finally fell in the 44th over, caught behind off Umer Gul to end any hopes of an unlikely win. He hit six sixes and five boundaries during his 137-ball knock. Gul finished with 3-31.

Iftikhar’s previous best figures of 3-33 came against South Africa at Faisalabad last year.

Earlier Pakistan were helped to 273-6 in their 50 overs by a brilliant 101 by Younus Khan and an unbeaten 79 by Misbahul Haq who together added 103 for the third wicket.

Younus hit five boundaries and a six, and also added 85 for the second wicket with opener Khurrum Manzoor (30) after Pakistan won the toss and batted.

Younus and Manzoor steadied the innings after Pakistan lost Salman Butt for nought.

Younus reached his sixth one-day hundred with a sharp single off Daren Powell but two balls later he attempted a reverse sweep off spinner Nikita Miller and was bowled.

Captain Shoaib Malik made 13 and Shahid Afridi managed just six.

Haq continued his good work, hitting three boundaries and a six and added an invaluable 40 for the sixth wicket with Akmal who was bowled off the final delivery for 21.

Pakistan kept an unchanged side, meaning paceman Shoaib Akhtar missed all three matches due to calf muscle injury. West Indies brought in Brendan Nash in place of Carlton Baugh.
