Test series having slipped out of Indias fingers

August 13th, 2008

Test series, Sri Lanka, Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, IndianTest series already having slipped out of Indias fingers ODI skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday feels losing Sachin Tendulkar ahead of the one dayers against Sri Lanka could be crucial for the team. Losing Sachin Tendulkar at this point of time can be crucial. It is very difficult to fill the space when it comes to Sachin.

He not only contributes with the bat and the ball his impact in the dressing room is great Dhoni told reporters on his arrival. Players look up to him and he always come up with brilliant suggestion and advices on the field as well. Talent wise and advice point of view it is very difficult to fill in his space he said. Tendulkar who jarred his left elbow while fielding in the third and final Test has been ruled out of the ODI series after he was prescribed three-week rest. Dhoni, however challenged his younger team members grab the opportunity to make a mark at this level.  At the same time cricket goes on. It is upto the guys who have been given a chance over here to perform and to prove that they are good enough for international cricket at times we have seen that when such a thing arises in the international scenario the youngsters come up they accept the responsibility and they take it as a challenge. Hopefully, it will be great to see someone who has just made his mark in the international level to really perform at the top he said. It is one of the toughest places to play cricket. It is not easy. You don’t really see loads of runs in the one-dayers because the wickets are quite slow. You have to work for your runs. It will be interesting.

Gambhir and Sehwag playing well Dhoni

July 4th, 2008

 Gambhir Sehwag Dhoni Pakistan

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni praised his opening batsmen Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag for giving the team a flying start to lay the foundation for their 6 wicket win over Sri Lanka and they have given us some great starts in the competition and it has made the job of chasing big totals easier for us Dhoni said at the post match press conference. Sehwag and Gambhir put on 92 runs for the opening wicket in 11.4 overs to plot Indias easy win over Sri Lanka and set up a summit clash on Sunday against the same opponents. Even though the wickets in this tournament have been very flat and that is why we have seen totals of 300 still you need good starts to take the pressure off the middle order batsmen he said. Dhoni said normally if a team had to chase 300 runs there was nervousness and confusion at the interval and but in this tournament due to the pitches everyone is relaxed and knows it is possible to chase down. He said it was a great feeling to be in the final which would be a tough one against a very good side. The Indian captain insisted that the performance of the bowlers in the tournament should not be a criteria to assess their worth. Let us be clear that we have a bunch of very talented and exciting players. But the pitches have nothing in it for the bowlers even the spinners have got little turn so it has been hard on them and put more responsibility on the batsmen Dhoni added. Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene said he was more comfortable playing India in the final. I think Pakistan can be a very dangerous side playing a big match in front of its home crowd. So in a way we have cut that element of crowd support out. It is good for India and Sri Lanka they don`t have to worry about this factor. Jayawardene said his team had fallen 25 to 30 runs short of posting a defendable total. We lost wickets when our batsmen were set. You need a big hundred from someone which we usually get to post a big total he said adding that he was not disappointed with the result. What is important is how we executive our plans and strategies in the final.

Visibly Shaken after The Loss Dhoni

June 15th, 2008

Visibly Shaken after The Loss Dhoni

ODI Tri series final on the top orders failure to build solid partnerships while admitting that he too committed a couple of tactical blunders. Visibly shaken after the loss Dhoni said the 315 run target set by Pakistan last night would not have been much of a challenge had his top order played sensibly. We lost wickets at regular intervals. It is very important to see yourself in the last five or seven overs if you have wickets in hand. If you see the wicket it was a flat wicket he said. Even 300 odd is really chaseable if you have wickets in hand and they were 100 for one in 25 runs and that went against our bowlers. They played some good shots and that really put the bowlers under pressure. We did not get a good start. Losing wickets at regular intervals was the killer he added.Dhoni admitted that sending Suresh Raina up the order instead of himself was a mistake but that alone cannot be considered the reason for the defeat. It was a mistake. I should have come ahead of Raina having made that mistake I cannot really help it now. That decision was taken in a positive frame of mind. If Yuvraj would have played through and Raina would have rotated the strike better instead of taking singles when Yuvraj was batting he rued. That would have put us in a comfortable position at the end of the 40th over. Irfan and couple of other guys coming it would have been an easy target but as I said we kept losing wickets. We never really looked in to accelerate and we lost wickets. That weakened our chances Dhoni said. The skipper also conceded that his field placements could have been better when Salman Butt and Younis Khan let loose en route to their respective hundreds. Well he Butt was scoring through square leg and sweeping towards square leg. If you look at the country area like long and things it is very difficult to score. Most of times he cleared the boundary pick the ball from outside off from the stump as well. He took on the bowlers and more often he was successful and that really put bowlers under pressure he explained and the stumper said that the Pakistanis used the field to their advantage but the Indians were guilty of playing extravagant shots at a time when caution and restraint were needed more often than not we ended up with the fielder. If you see each time the fielder had never have to move to take the catch you can say that selection of shots were not appropriate but at the same time you have to play your shots as well because you are chasing over six runs an over. We never had the momentum with us he said. On Pakistans performance Dhoni said they were hundred for one in 25 overs and then see how much they scored in the last 25 overs. They put loads of pressure. They are learning from each match. We win some and we lose some matches.

Super Kings captain MS Dhoni

April 28th, 2008

 IPL Dhoni super kings

After his side`s narrow 13-run victory over Bangalore Royal Challengers here today, Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni said the match was a close one and only a few overs had decided the match. We held on to our nerves and it was a close finish. When we were batting, the ball was swinging till the 15th-16th over. Michael Hussey started to slog and I joined him. That was how we scored a competitive total of 178,” Dhoni said at the post-match press conference. When they bowled, Dhoni said they committed a mistake by not shinning the ball on one side till late in the home team`s run chase. We started shinning the ball from the 15th over onwards, that was an important factor in our win,” he said. Royal Challengers were cruising at one time but fell short of the target as they lost their last seven wickets for just 38 runs. On how his team will cope now that three of their key players - Mathew Hayden, Michael Hussey and Jacob Oram - will miss further action in the IPL tournament due to their national duty, Dhoni said his side has other overseas players to replace them. We still have Stephen Fleming, Albie Morkel and Makhaya Ntini to deliver the goods for us. The good news is that our bowlers are doing well particularly when our attack is considered very weak among the teams in the IPL,” said Dhoni. He praised medium pacer Manpreet Gony for his effort, saying, “He knows his limitations improving by every match. His strength is that he bowls in the right areas and waits for the batsman to take the risk. Losing skipper Rahul Dravid rued not to have won the game from a position of strength. We were in control while chasing. (Wasim) Jaffer and (Ross) Taylor batted well and they had set up the game but later we lost too many wickets too quickly,” he lamented the missed chance. When bowling also, we were in control till the 18th over. But somehow we conceded lots of runs in the last two overs. No doubt Dhoni batted really well. We should not be chasing more than 150 in this match but Dale Steyn`s last over proved dear for us and Dhoni`s assault was too much,” said Dravid. Dravid, who scored his second successive duck in the tournament, rued his poor form. I don`t know what form I`m in. It was sad to get a duck again and in Twenty20 matches you hardly get time to settle down,” he said. Royal Challengers next move to Delhi to play Delhi Daredevils on April 30 before returning home on may 3 to take on Deccan Chargers.
