Incorrect to slip 50-over game - Lewis

September 4th, 2009

Jon Lewis, the former Gloucestershire captain and England seamer, has criticised the decision to do away with the 50-over format in county cricket, arguing that the limited-overs game in the domestic circuit should remain consistent with the international format.

The counties voted 13-5 in favour of embracing the new format, which reduces the number of overs to 40 but retains the Powerplays and fielding restrictions, like in the 50-over game. It is believed that the 40-over game still retains popularity among county members and is easier to sell than the 50-over fixture.

However, Lewis, who’s played one Test and 13 ODIs, felt otherwise. “If you asked the players and members, I think a majority of them would be in favour of retaining the 50-over competition,” he told to media. There is something unique and very, very special about playing for your county in a showpiece final at Lord’s. It’s something which simply isn’t available to players or spectators in Twenty20 cricket. I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in quite a few Lord’s finals with Gloucestershire and they are an amazing experience. It will be sad to see that removed from the programme.”

But Lewis supported the retention of the two-division County Championship format which promoted and relegated teams based on their performance. “That remains the best option for the England team,” he said. “By keeping the two-division system with promotion and relegation and teams playing one another on a home and away basis, the competition has at least been permitted to retain its integrity.

“This structure has definitely promoted increased competition and raised standards and that has to be good for the England team. Personally I was relieved when the ECB listened to the counties and decided to leave the four-day game well alone.”

England undergo Denly damage fear

September 3rd, 2009

England batsman Joe Denly will undergo a scan on his left knee on Thursday after suffering an injury during England’s practice session prior to the first ODI against Australia at The Oval and is doubtful for the opening match of the series. Denly twisted his knee while playing football with his England team-mates in a warm-up session and was carried to the dressing room by team staff.

The injury was sustained as Denly toppled forwards following a collision with Owais Shah. His left leg caught in the turf as he lost balance, and after rolling on impact he took several moments before attempting to flex his knee, he had to be helped up the steep flight of steps to the dressing rooms by Russell and the team security advisor Reg Dickason.

Denly scored 67 from 111 balls in tough conditions on his ODI debut against Ireland last Thursday, and though he followed up with a golden duck in the first abandoned Twenty20 fixture at Old Trafford,

That place is now in serious doubt for Friday’s day-night fixture. The ECB confirmed that the injury had been looked at by the team medical staff, but a decision on a replacement is likely to be deferred until after the results of his scan.

Strauss said that the players went too hard on this occasion and the football warm-up would be reviewed. “The reason we’ve played football in the past is because … it’s a good way of getting the blood flowing we’ve felt that if it’s played sensibly the chances of anyone getting injured is slight,” he said. “If we’re honest and there is a chance of people getting injured then we’ll look at it.”

Flintoff, 31, pulled out of the three-day Caribbean tour opener against a St Kitts & Nevis XI and was dispatched to Jamaica for further investigation of the problem.

He underwent a MRI scan with the results assessed back in the UK by the England and Wales Cricket Board’s chief medical officer Nick Peirce.

“The scan showed no major damage and we will continue to assess Andrew on a daily basis,” said an England team spokesman.

England have one further warm-up game, a three-day affair against West Indies A starting on January 29, prior to the first Test in Jamaica from February 4-8.

“We haven’t made a decision yet as to whether he is available for the next three-day game,” added the spokesman.

Meanwhile, another of the tourists’ walking wounded, Owais Shah, was undergoing further medical checks on a scratched cornea.

Shah, who hit an unbeaten 125 on the opening day of the tour, sported an eye-patch after an initial examination on Monday.

Flintoff dismisses reports

January 14th, 2009

The public fallout between Pietersen and coach Peter Moores came to a head when both lost their jobs. Moores was sacked by the ECB while Pietersen opted to resign.

Some reports had claimed that Flintoff was among a group of senior players that had failed to support Pietersen when approached by the ECB.

However Flintoff insists he had given both Pietersen and Moores his backing to keep their jobs.

“I hoped both of them could carry on in their jobs,” he told the media.

“I supported Kevin as captain and I also enjoyed working with Peter. It is a shame that things had to end the way they did.

“I guess something had to happen, but I probably didn’t realise how serious it was between them. Having only been involved for a short space of time I didn’t see it coming.”

Flintoff, who captained England during the Ashes drubbing Down Under, was linked as a leading contender to replace Pietersen as skipper.

However the Lancashire star insists he was not interested in the captaincy, which was handed to Andrew Strauss.

“The captaincy is not something I’m hanging out for,” added Flintoff.

“I had a go at it and I found it quite difficult trying to bat, bowl, field at slip and then captain as well.

“My priority is getting a win in the West Indies.”

LONDON: It seems that every new day comes with a new story about the resignation of former English Captain Kevin Pietersen from captaincy.

Pietersen writing in a news column revealed that the way ECB pushed him out of the captaincy has hurt him deep down heart. Pietersen said that he was duped to resign, as initially he was assured that his resignation would be used only for pressuring the Board, while the Board members were seeking his opinion on the different candidates for new coach, but ECB Managing Director, Hugh Morris suddenly one day told him on phone that his resignation has been approved and just after few minutes Board’s e-mail in this regard was also received and only then he realized what game the Board played with him. Besides, it was also reported that Pietersen had wished to resign during the India tour, but the decision was put off on the insistence of the Board.

Strauss New England Skipper

January 7th, 2009

LONDON: Andrew Strauss will invasion as England cricket skipper following the resignation of Kevin Pietersen, the organization manager of England cricket said on Wednesday.

Hugh Morris also inveterate that team coach Peter Moores had been asked to
“surrender his role” after Pietersen’s resignation, which followed a dispute between the captain and the coach.

“The England and Wales Cricket Board have accepted with be unhappy the acquiescence of Kevin Pietersen as captain,” he said, reading a statement at an emergency press conference at The Oval cricket ground in London.

But he added that Pietersen was “highly valued as a senior and experienced player and we are delighted that he has indicated that he is willing to remain part of the England team.”

Regarding Moores, Morris said the ECB had decided that he “should relinquish his role” for the good of the England cricket squad.

Pietersen, South African born as is his stand-in Strauss, had questioned the aptitude of Moores - who never played worldwide cricket himself - as a coach in a argument which became public just weeks before England go away on January 21 for their tour of the West Indies.

Steve calls for Harm-ony

January 6th, 2009
Steve Harmison
Steve Harmison

England paceman Steve Harmison has called for coach Peter Moores and skipper Kevin Pietersen to sort out their problems before they rip the team apart.

Moores and Pietersen are thought to have suffered a breakdown in their relationship, and crisis talks are set to take place once the skipper returns from holiday later in the week.

With the Ashes coming up this year, after a tour to the West Indies, Harmison says that any problems between the pair need to be sorted out as soon as possible.

The future of Moores in particular has been placed in doubt by many pundits, with the ECB likely to side with their skipper and talisman if forced to take sides.

With just over a fortnight until England fly out to the Caribbean, some resolution has to be agreed upon sooner rather than later.

Durham paceman Harmison says that the pair need to think of the team above their own concerns, and sort out their differences quickly one way or the other.

“They have got to get their heads together and have a chat and sort out the issues,” said Harmison.

“It’s about the England cricket team - not Peter Moores or Kevin Pietersen.

“If there is a problem it needs to be sorted sooner rather than later.”

Geoffrey Calls For Boycott

December 4th, 2008
Geoff Boycott
Geoff Boycott

ECB officials are presently in talks with their Indian counterparts over the visit, which has been halted subsequent the terrorist attacks that took place in and in the region of England’s base in Mumbai.

But in spite of suggestions a 20-man commando force could be employed to defend the players, the ex- England batsman has slammed the idea of a return to India in the current ambiance.

“Given what has just happened in India, it is hideous for the ECB even to be thinking about sending the team back out again,” Boycott

“It’s all very well to say ‘We mustn’t let the terrorists win’, but what about the grieving families who have lost loved ones.

“Sport is supposed to be enjoyable, entertaining and essentially fun. But I don’t know how any of that can be possible when India is burying more than 200 victims of terror.

“In fact, the ECB are showing a lack of moral judgment by pressing ahead with all these meetings and security inspections. The whole thing is just too raw.

“People have been trying to draw parallels between this disaster and the London bombings of July 2005, and pointing out that the Ashes series carried on regardless. The two situations are completely different.”
