Cricket should be included in Olympics - Gilchrist

June 24th, 2009

Gilchrist the former Australian wicket keeper and batsman call for cricket to be included in olympics. This issue was raised before Ricky Ponting also. Cricket is a glamorous games, if it is involve in olympics there will be more thrill and interest. It will help in promoting the game too.

He was delivering the Cowdrey Lecture at Lord’s on Wednesday and his opinion of including T20 format cricket in olympics will leads to better and cheaper way of spreading the cricket throughout world. Although it is not skillful as test matches but still the T20 game can promote cricket across the globe.

Virender Sehwag panned his Deccan Chargers

May 16th, 2008

 Sehwaq Gilchrist

Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag panned his Deccan Chargers counterpart Adam Gilchrist for casting aspersions on Mohammad Asif`s injury which forced the pacer to leave the field midway before returning for the final phase of the proceedings and after his side sunk to their eighth defeat in the tournament Gilchrist took a jibe at Asif`s injury and said it was unfair that Delhi fielded a couple of substitutes. This is for the first time I saw so many substitute fielders taking so many catches. I mean you see the bowler bowling and going off to come back bowl again and again going off. I mean it`s for the umpires to see a visibly disgruntled Gilchrist said in the post match press conference. Shoaib Malik replaced Asif in the field while AB De Villiers came in place of Gautam Gambhir, who had injured his knee while batting. Gilchrist however was not happy with Asif`s on and off presence in the field and said I think I should express my concern. If a bowler`s fit enough to bowl he`s fit enough to field. Clearly not amused with Gilchrist casting aspersion on one of his bowlers Sehwag said the Australian should check the rulebook before making any comment. I think if umpires did not have any problems Gilchrist too should not have any. I mean he can see the rulebook, which clearly says a bowler can go out as many times as needed in case of external injury. Asif was injured while fielding Sehwag said. It was an external injury Asif split webbing on his hand) and when blood spills umpires allow you to go off and return. He can check the rulebook explained Sehwag.

Gilchrist Scripts convincing Victory for Hyderabad

May 6th, 2008

IPL Gilchrist

With a batting order to die for, Hydebarad were in a quandary as to what would take them to get a win under their belt. Neither star power, nor the rub of the green was on their side with one win out of six games. But after losing out in many a close contest, Hyderabad posted a convincing seven-wicket win over tournament favourites Chennai at the Chidambaram stadium here on Tuesday. In the absence of regular skipper VVS Laxman, Adam Gilchrist led his side to victory with a bludgeoning 36-ball 54, before RP Singh led a disciplined bowling effort as Chennai were restricted to 144-7. Stuck with a nagging problem of the top order falling apart before they knew what hit them, Hyderabad finally displayed true potential of their batting. While Gilchrist flayed the Chennai bowlers, Scott Styris (36 not out), Rohit Sharma (23) and Shahid Afridi (20 not out) all made it count with the bat. Though they need much more than this, the win was a welcome start to what looked like a withering campaign. Desperately seeking a win to keep alive their chances in the IPL, RP and Paidikalva Vijaykumar gave Hyderabad the perfect start as both struck from either end early to remove Parthiv Patel and Srikkanth Anirudh, son of former India captain Kris Srikkanth. That the departure of Australian and Kiwi players has affected teams was vindicated for Chennai. Matthew Hayden, Mike Hussey and Jacob Oram’s loss has severely dampened Chennai’s batting line-up, as it happened for the second time here after their dismal showing in Jaipur on Sunday. Two dropped chances seemed the script began to go against Hyderabad, but Rohit Sharma and Herschelle Gibbs made up for them with two outstanding catches as Stephen Fleming (14) and S Badrinath’s (0) dismissals further dented Chennai’s progress.

Adam Gilchrist blitzkrieg century

April 27th, 2008

 Adam Gilchrist century

Adam Gilchrist couldn’t have chosen a better stage than this to come good. Playing in a packed spanking new stadium, he stunned the Mumbai Indians with a blitzkrieg century to script a ten-wicket win in just 12.4 overs. Gilchrist scored 109 not out off just 48 balls, getting to his century off only 42 deliveries, overtaking teammate Andrew Symonds’ effort off 48 balls. VVS Laxman kept Gilchrist company with a knock of 36 not out, but it was Gilchrist’s game. He hit ten sixes and nine fours during his stay on the crease. Abhishek Nayar and Dwayne Bravo got Mumbai Indians to something of a total as they carried their side to 154-7 in a game they need to win to get some points on the board. Nayar scored 34 balls off 19 balls with three sixes and one four, while Bravo scored the same number of runs in one ball lesser, with the aid of one six and three boundaries. For Hyderabad, RP Singh returned figures of 2-15 while Sanjay Bangar and Shahid Afridi also got two wickets each. Visiting skipper VVS Laxman took the first step right, winning the toss the electing to field. Mumbai were rocked by the Harbhajan Singh controversy, were again denied the services of Sachin Tendulkar, and will also miss Harbhajan, who has been suspended, pending the IPL match referee’s inquiry on Monday. Shaun Pollock will be skipper for the home team for this match. Hyderabad decided to rest Chaminda Vaas and called up his Sri Lankan teammate Nowan Zoysa.

Tribute to Gilchrist

January 27th, 2008

Gilchrist the name in cricket come to mind and many cricketers wish to be like him. His batting and wicket keeping duties will remind us of great entertainment moments. Now he has decided to retire, which is sad for cricket lovers.

Gilchrist, 36, on Friday became the world record holder for most test dismissals by a wicketkeeper when he picked up his 414th career dismissal at the Adelaide Oval to move past South Africa’s Mark Boucher.

The West Australia gloveman made his test debut in 1999 and has played 96 tests in succession, also a record.

”It is with great pride and happiness that I make the decision to retire from test and one-day cricket,” Gilchrist said in a statement Saturday.

”I have come to this decision after much thought and discussion with those important to me.”

Gilchrist helped revolutionize the test game as an attacking batsman from No. 7 and scored 5,556 runs at 47.89, with a highest score of 204 not out.

He scored 17 test centuries.

Gilchrist also captained Australia in five tests, in the absence of Steve Waugh and then Ricky Ponting, for a record of three wins, one loss and one draw.

He made his first-class debut in 1992-93 for New South Wales but established himself when he crossed the country and played for Western Australia. He made his international debut in 1996 when he played the first of 277 one-day internationals.

We love you Gilchrist and wish you best of luck in your life.
