Intenational cricketers should buycot IPL

January 21st, 2010

All International cricket players and cricket board should ban Indian Premier League (IPL). It is a shameful decision of not including the Pakistani players through shameful act of pressurizing the team management to not bid for the T20 specialists Pakistani players. The politics should be away from cricket as cricket is game for peace and love.

This is a time for international players association to act and save the prestige of cricketers and pride of the game. It is really shameful when the cricket fans are being stopped to watch the great display from the current great T20 players. The cricketers have country stamp but not the cricket. It should be carry on without prejudice.

Today it is happening to Pakistan and in future it can happen to other players too. Indian cricket board has members whose thinking is based on racism and hatred while sports does not allow such act because sports present not the nations only rather humanity too.

Recently there were some people in India who were trying to threat Australian players to stop them of taking part in IPL. Instead of banning and threatening the cricketers the cricket should be free of any negative acts. The board of Indian cricket should think again to re auction the players and give a relief to cricket fans.

On the other hand the association of cricketers should take necessary steps to avoid such happening in future to make sure cricket available for all.

IPL Inquires BCCI To Take A Final Call On IMG Concern

September 3rd, 2009

IPL

IPL and BCCI foundations said that BCCI president Shashank Manohar wills appraisal the matter and at hand his statement and suggestions to the BCCI’s working commission on September 24.

The decision was taken to end the chasm between two powerful BCCI officials - Lalit Modi and N Srinivasan.

The BCCI’s decision to terminate the services of the IMG from IPL was seen as an attempt to clip Modi’s wings.

But with seven IPL franchises and even the former BCCI president Sharad Pawar throwing their weight behind Modi, the IPL Governing Council met here on Wednesday and took the decision to take the matter before the BCCI Working Committee.

Earlier, a ‘disturbed’ Pawar reportedly snubbed Srinivasan and expressed his disappointment in no uncertain terms in a letter addressed to Manohar.

”When I was the board president, we signed a 10-year agreement with IMG to conceptualise, formulate and implement a new league along with Lalit Modi and the same was approved at all appropriate levels,” he stated.

”IMG has been instrumental in day-to-day operations of the league and we should come to a suitable arrangement (with IMG). In IPL, there are many stakeholders and anything we do that may jeopardize their investments will show BCCI in a bad light. With the overwhelming success of the IPL, it is our duty to protect not only BCCI but also all its stakeholders,” Pawar said.

Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, is of the outlook that the IMG has been fleece the BCCI, and therefore, its services should be completed.

The Rebel ICL,ICC and Board of Control For Cricket In India Tried To Thrash Out Deal

February 24th, 2009

Morgan was there in Johannesburg as officials from the rebel ICL, the ICC and the Board of Control for Cricket in India tried to thrash out a deal.

ICL chiefs are keen to acquire ‘unofficial cricket’ status - a new idea introduced by the ICC for tournaments which are not run by a country’s home board but are approved.

However, after a three-hour meeting in South Africa a breakthrough could not be found between all parties, and a decision will now be left to the ICC in April.

“I am grateful to all parties for coming together with the best of intentions and the discussions took place in a friendly and cordial manner but, unfortunately, we were not able to come to a successful conclusion in our discussions,” said Morgan.

“The ICL’s application for approval as unofficial cricket will now go before the ICC board at its April meeting in Dubai.

“Given the discussions took place without prejudice, no further comment will be made at this time.”

The ICL, bankrolled by television giants Zee, has been in a bitter dispute with the BCCI, who stages the approved Indian Premier League.

Several countries have banned their players from playing international cricket if they turned out for the ICL - as they try to avoid any big-name players making an appearance.

Previous talks in October also broke down and Zee has previously threatened to get the courts involved to resolve the dispute.

Lee Is Targeting The ODI Series Against Pakistan In April

February 16th, 2009

Australian fast bowler Brett Lee is recovering from his injury faster than expected and is set for an early comeback to international cricket in the one-day series against Pakistan in April.

Sidelined with stress fractures in his foot since early last month, 32-year-old Lee was initially expected to return in the World Twenty20 to be held in England in June.

But with his rehabilitation ahead of schedule, Lee is targeting the five-match one-day series against Pakistan in United Arab Emirates.

He is planning to run in the next fortnight and bowl by mid-March after having a surgical boot removed last week.

“The good news is the healing is two weeks ahead of schedule. There’s no need to rush Brett, but it looks like he will be available for selection for the Pakistan one-dayers, that’s the target,” Lee’s agent Neil Maxwell said.

“It’s better than where he should be and Brett is really pumped. The most encouraging sign is that he said to me the other day, ‘I’ve never been more excited about playing cricket’,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by ‘Sunday Telegraph’.

Should Lee not be available for the Pakistan series, he will be encouraged by Cricket Australia to play in the latter stages of the Indian Premier League.

CA physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Lee could benefit with a stint in the IPL, which concludes two weeks after the one-day series against Pakistan.

“Brett might play in the IPL because it might fit in with our time frame. We’d probably like him to play the latter part of the IPL because it will give him some cricket before he plays in the World Cup.

“He’s going really well. I saw him last week and he’s making good progress. At the moment, he’s doing a lot of strength work and he will be cleared to start running in a couple of weeks,” Kountouris said.

Pietersen didn’t lose sleep tracking IPL auction

February 8th, 2009

Kevin Pietersen has said he did not stay up all night in Jamaica, where he was on tour with the England side, awaiting the results of the IPL auction on February 6. Pietersen emerged the big winner along with team-mate Andrew Flintoff at the event in Goa, earning annual contracts worth US$1.55 million each, making them the highest-earning players in the league. However, Pietersen said he was wary of flaunting around his dollars while his friends were coping with the global economic crisis.

“It’s an unbelievable amount of money,” Pietersen told media. “But I didn’t stay up all night waiting for the results of the auction. I am in the Caribbean in the middle of an important Test series against the West Indies and preparation and focus for that is the most important thing.

“I was honoured when I heard the news that I was one of the most highly-rated players in the world. But I can’t let things like this affect my focus,” he said. “There has been no banter in the dressing room as to how much money we went for. There is a huge credit crunch in England and some of my mates have been made redundant. I have friends who have lost their jobs, so it’s not the time to start shaking your money around.”

While Pietersen was bought by Bangalore Royal Challengers, Flintoff was purchased for the same sum by Chennai Super Kings - who had paid US$1.5m for Mahendra Singh Dhoni last year. Flintoff, too, was happy with the way things had panned out. “We would not have had any problem with different prices, but I guess being the same might stop a few of the other lads taking the mick. I’m very pleased. I went in at $950,000 so to get that much it’s unbelievable really, it has not quite sunk in, I guess. I regard it as a massive bonus.

“My team includes guys like my friend Murali [Muttiah Muralitharan], Matthew Hayden and Mahendra Singh Dhoni as captain. So it’s a very exciting team,” he said. “But I’m here in Jamaica playing a Test match. My mind is full of that and the IPL is not for another six weeks. I just regard it as a massive bonus.”

Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah were the other players in the touring party to bag contracts - both for the Delhi Daredevils. “I didn’t make any plans to stay up with the Test match in progress, but I must admit I got a text message telling me what had happened. I slept easily after that!” Collingwood said. “I’m absolutely delighted at the price tag on my head. The reserve price was $250,000 so to get a bit more than that is a really nice feeling.”

There was some cheer in the opposition camp as well, with West Indian fast bowlers Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards being lapped up at the auction, although Ramnaresh Sarwan and Daren Powell were unsold. Edwards got news of his $150,000 contract with the Deccan Chargers on his 27th birthday.

“It feels great. It was a good birthday gift,” he told the media. Playing in the IPL will give me the chance to have a new experience and play alongside different players and in different conditions,” he said. “It is good to see people recognising your talent and requiring your services.”

Edwards was a surprise pick, given he played only three Twenty20 games for Barbados, and was not part of the Stanford Superstars squad that won the Stanford 20/20 for 20 against England last year.”I always felt I was good enough to play Twenty20 cricket. This is good for me personally and good for my cricket career,” he said. “At present, however, I am concentrating on West Indies cricket and looking to help the team beat England. This series is crucial to us and we want to win and more importantly win at home.”

IPL still an issue for England

January 20th, 2009

The lucrative Twenty20 competition took the majority of the cricketing world by storm in its inaugural season in 2008.

But Dimitri Mascarenhas was the only England representative present, with the England and Wales Cricket Board struggling to make room for the competition in its calendar.

Fifteen days have since been allocated for the six-week competition in 2009, which is provisionally scheduled to start on April 10.

And new England captain Strauss is backing his players to do the right thing in the build-up to the first home Test against West Indies starting on May 6.

“Players have to be fully prepared for a Test match. Now what that preparation means is dependent on the players to a certain extent. I’m quite happy to trust the players,” Strauss said.

“The players that are going to be involved in the IPL are experienced campaigners. They know what sort of preparation they need in order to prepare for Test matches and I’m sure that whatever time they have prior to the Test match they will use that wisely.”

Strauss has set up a players’ management group, comprising of Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Alastair Cook and Stuart Broad, since assuming the captaincy from Kevin Pietersen and the emphasis appears to be on giving the players more responsibility.

“I have asked them to be very honest with themselves about what they need to do in order to prepare for test matches,” he added.

“I’m going to trust them to go out and prepare themselves and they will use the coaches as little or as much as they feel necessary. And the coaches are very happy with that.

“The coaches will play a little more of an advisory (and) consultancy role.”

Strauss and England head to the Caribbean on Wednesday ahead of the four-Test, one Twenty20 international and five-match one-day international series against the Windies, starting in Jamaica on February 4.

McGrath considering future

December 12th, 2008
Glenn McGrath
Glenn McGrath

Former Australia seamer Glenn McGrath has cast doubt on his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) because of security concerns.

McGrath is contracted to the Delhi Daredevils and helped the Indian capital’s team reach the semi-finals in the inaugural edition of the tournament earlier this year.

The second season of the IPL is scheduled to begin on April 10, but the terrorist attacks in Mumbai that threatened England’s Test series with India have created new doubt.

And although McGrath is willing to go back, he first wants to be provided with assurances over security.

“I have agreed to go back for this year,” McGrath told the Herald Sun.

“But that was before everything happened over in India anyway, so I guess we will just play it by ear and see what happens closer to the time.

“But as it stands I am going back for another season.”

Watson is ready for an improved Graeme Smith

December 6th, 2008
Shane Watson
Shane Watson

Australia all-rounder Shane Watson believes South Africa captain Graeme Smith will be a far more assured leader when the Proteas challenge Australia’s Test standing this month.

Smith struggled under the weight of captaincy and batting expectations in his last visit Down Under when targeted on and off the field by Shane Warne.

The gun opener averaged just 25.83 in the 2-0 series loss in Australia three years ago and went even worse in the return series at home as the world champions enjoyed a 3-0 whitewash.

But Watson said Smith, still only 27, had grown as a leader after being “thrown in the deep end” when made captain at 22.

Watson played alongside the Proteas skipper in this year’s inaugural Indian Premier League, with the pair forging a successful top-order combination which propelled the Warne-led Rajhastan Royals to the Twenty20 title.

The Queenslander, who is hoping to regain his place in the Australia side for the first Test in Perth, said he learned a great deal from Smith in India.

“He is a very impressive guy,” Watson said.

“I’m sure he is going to make sure South Africa are going to be ripe and ready to go for the Test series.”

South Africa, ranked No.2 in Test cricket, arrive in the country next week looking to maintain their unbeaten series run dating back to their last meeting with top-ranked Australia.

Watson lauded Smith’s mentoring skills and said he helped instill great confidence in himself as he took his first steps back into the international arena after his last injury drama in late 2007.

“He is an extremely mature bloke, he has been through a lot with his cricket and obviously some of the politics that goes on with South African cricket at times,” he said.

“I learnt from him the ways to develop and mature as a cricketer and the things you go through.

“He’s been through quite a bit with the captaincy. Talking to him was a great way to learn about life.”

Watson said while Smith and Warne were arch-enemies as Test rivals they were the best of teammates playing together for the Royals.

“It’s amazing when you play against some one as opposed to playing with them, it’s just like they are a totally different bloke,” he said.

“Warney and Graeme Smith got along extremely well when the barriers were broken down. They realised they had got a lot in common.”

A hard-hitting 81 and career-best 7-69 in the Sheffield Shield this week showcased  Watson’s skills that are set to see him picked in the Australian squad on Tuesday.

But it appears he will again fight with spinner Jason Krejza for a spot in the starting XI.

It`s a whole new world of risk in India now: FICA

December 5th, 2008
FICA
FICA

Federation of International Cricketers` Association says the terror attacks in Mumbai have turned India into a “risky” place and it is planning to hold a security summit to discuss the “volatile situation” there.

“It`s a whole new world of risk in India now, that rather than having these random bombings of random places, they are targeting western (interests),” FICA chief executive Tim May was quoted as saying by `The Age`.

“Obviously it is a relatively volatile sort of landscape at the moment. The overwhelming direction that is coming through from players is that they totally understand how important it is for cricket to continue to be played in the subcontinent, and that is not from a selfish point of view in terms of player wages, it is also about the whole game,” he
added.

May said the lure of playing in the cash-rich Indian leagues would always draw players to India and therefore it was imperative to address the security issues.

“It is obviously very lucrative to play IPL, ICL, Champion`s League or whatever in India, but what we are trying to address is on a larger scale. It is imperative for cricket to continue in that region because there`s a lot of countries whose financial survival is dependent upon revenues that are generated within that particular territory,” he explained.

“At the end of the day, there will be a process that hopefully will get all the stakeholders together to run some sort of security summit,” he added.
