Mahela Jayawardene Has Confirmed To Quit Captain

February 11th, 2009

COLOMBO: Mahela Jayawardene has announced here on Wednesday to resign as captain of the Sri Lanka’s cricket team and said that the upcoming Test series in Pakistan would be his last series as captain. The 31-year-old batsman said he has decided to resign in the best interest of the Sri Lankan cricket.

Jayawardene said that he has taken the decision after thoroughly considering it and it was the right time to leave the captaincy.
He said that the captaincy should be handed over to a young player for going into preparations for the 2011 World Cup.

Jayawardene said that the two-Test series in Pakistan would be his last series as captain.

Mahela Jayawardene’s decision to quit came after India completed a 4-1 rout of Sri Lanka in the recent one-day series.

The middle-order batsman, who led Sri Lanka for the first time in April 2004, did not play in Tuesday’s Twenty20 international here, which India won by three wickets.

Jayawardene however made it clear he was not quitting the team altogether.

Jayawardene guided Sri Lanka to the World Cup final in the West Indies in 2007, where they lost to Australia.

He captained Sri Lanka in 26 Tests, winning 15, losing seven with four draws.

In 94 one-day internationals under him, Sri Lanka won 54 and lost 35 while the rest ended in no-results.

The first Test in Pakistan will be played in Karachi from February 21-25, while the second and final match will be played in Lahore from March 1-5.

Jayawardene Plays Down Mendis Hype In Pakistan Series

January 19th, 2009
Ajantha Mendis

Ajantha Mendis

KARACHI: Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene Sunday refused to single out spin sensation Ajantha Mendis as the major threat for Pakistan in the one-day series.

The 23-year-old Mendis and his more illustrious partner Muttiah Muralitharan are tipped to hold the aces against the home team in the three-match series which starts here from Tuesday.

But Jayawardene said Mendis doesn’t carry extra burden of expectations.

Mendis, who made his debut in the West Indies in May last year, became the fastest bowler to get 50 wickets, achieving the total in 19 matches, breaking Indian Ajit Agarkar’s record of 23 matches.

Jayawardene said he would not like to put extra pressure on the newcomer.

Jayawardene refused to agree Sri Lanka are struggling with their overall form after losing to Bangladesh in the last league match and scrapping to a narrow two-wicket win in the final of the tri-series in Dhaka last week.

Chasing a modest 153, Sri Lanka lost their first five wickets for a mere six runs — the lowest total at the fall of five wickets in any one-day international — before Muralitharan’s 16-ball 33 saw them home.

Jayawardene admitted Pakistan are a dangerous team.

“Pakistan is always Pakistan for me. They are a very tough side whether they play regularly or not, so we will have to put up the best effort,” said Jayawardene.

The second match is here on Wednesday, while the final match is in Lahore on Saturday.

Sri Lanka seal whitewash

December 1st, 2008

Fifth One Day International
Harare Sports Club
Sri Lanka 152 v Zimbabwe 133 (M Muralitharan 5-29)
Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by 19 runs

Muttiah Muralitharan claimed five wickets to help Sri Lanka complete a 5-0 series whitewash over Zimbabwe in Harare.

The home side made the fifth one-day international much more competitive, but in a low scoring game spinner Muralitharan proved to be the difference.

Batting first, Sri Lanka could only make 152 all out, their lowest total of the series, with Ed Rainsford taking 3-22 for the home team.

Struggled

The tourists struggled from the start after being put into bat in Harare, losing Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Tharanga with just eight runs on the board.

With Rainsford leading the charge, Zimbabwe took wickets regularly and only Thilina Kandamby’s 40 and 31 from Angelo Mathews stood out.

Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene was dismissed for a duck for the second successive innings, as his side were bowled out with an over and one ball still left of their allotted 50.

Zimbabwe had a real chance to salvage some pride, but they could not handle Muralitharan, who took the first and last wicket while knocking over three quickly in the middle order.

Hope

They quickly slipped to 58-6 but Keith Dabengwa and Prosper Utseya gave Zimbabwe hope as they put on 72 for the sixth wicket.

But both batsmen fell in quick succession, Dabengwa the first to go when he was bowled by Nuwan Kulasekara after making 39.

Captain Utseya followed shortly after to the same bowler having made 31 off 99 balls and the game was then effectively over as a contest.

The final two wickets went without adding a run and as they finished on 133, yet again just short of pulling off a victory in the series

Sri Lanka captain Jayawardene drops English county spell

April 16th, 2008

mahela jayawardeneSri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene will not be able to play for Derbyshire as planned because of changes to other playing commitments, the English county side said on their Web site (www.derbyshireccc.com). The batsman had been scheduled to play from late April to mid-July but the move of the Asia Cup to June and changes to India’s tour of Sri Lanka meant there was too little time to make a shortened contract worthwhile, the club said.
