New Zealand are well-prepared to take on India

February 19th, 2009

The Indian cricket team, buoyed by recent series victories over England and Sri Lanka is off to New Zealand for its first series in six years. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men will play two Twenty20 matches, five One-Day International and two Tests over the next six weeks.

On the last tour of New Zealand in 2002, India lost both Tests inside three days before losing the one-day series 2-5. In fact, it’s been 33 years and 13 Tests since India won a Test in New Zealand. The score on the ODI front too is as gloomy: just six wins in 20 bilateral ODIs there.

This time though the team is better prepared for the seaming wickets, and conditions New Zealand venues offer, and looking to set the record straight.

Jayawardene talks up T20

February 10th, 2009

The Sri Lanka captain and his team failed to reach the last four of the inaugural edition of the tournament in South Africa in 2007 as Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s India went on to claim the title, which they are set to defend in England from June 5 to 21.

The growth of Twenty20 cricket, which has seen the advent of the Indian Premier League since the last contest, leads Jayawardene to believe the teams in England will be all the more competitive despite the conditions.

“We have learnt how to approach this game, so it will be much tougher this time,” said Jayawardene.

“Not every team knew how to approach the game in South Africa.

“But playing some Twenty20 cricket over the last two years has given us more experience. We have seen different tactics and how different people approach the game.

“Teams have scored 180 to 200 in a Twenty20 game, but it will not be easy in England as even 120 or 130 might be a winning total in those conditions.”

Far from agreeing with those who knock the newest innovation to the game, Jayawardene insists the format is benefiting world cricket.

“The batsmen need to be more innovative and bowlers have to find different options,” he added.

“I think the skill has improved after Twenty20 cricket. It is more aggressive. Big totals are being chased in one-dayers because batsmen have found different ways of scoring.

“It is a different challenge and cricketers like to challenge themselves differently.”

Jayawardene and his team are set to arrive in Karachi on Saturday, meanwhile, as they prepare for two Tests against Pakistan.

The first Test gets under way from February 21 with the second Test starting in Lahore from March 1.

The Karachi Test will be Pakistan’s first since December 2007 after heightened political tension prompted Australia and India to withdraw from their scheduled tours of the region.

Sri Lanka secure consolation win against India

February 8th, 2009

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara both struck half-centuries as Sri Lanka denied India a series sweep with a 68-run victory in the fifth and final one-day international in Colombo.

The defeat halted India’s run of nine straight wins in limited-overs internationals - a stretch that has lifted Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team to No.2 behind South Africa in the one-day world rankings.

Opener Dilshan blazed 97 off 117 balls while Sangakkara (84) scored his third successive half century of the series in Sri Lanka’s formidable total of 320-8 in 50 overs.

India lost wickets at regular intervals and never looked like threatening a strong Sri Lankan total before they were bowled out for 252 in 48.5 overs.

Yuvraj Singh gave the tourists a glimmer of hope with a typically brutal 73 off 62 balls that included11 boundaries and a six.

Debutante Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 60 off 77 balls as he and captain Dhoni (53) shared the highest partnership of the innings - 55 off 66 balls.

Sri Lanka spin king Muttiah Muralitharan steemed the flow of runs after Yuvraj’s onslaught at Sri Lankan seamer Farveez Maharoof before he took a skier to dismiss the left-hander in the 22nd over.

The off-spinner finished with 2-41 while unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis (2-44) also took two late wickets.

Sangakkara and Dilshan earlier combined in a 143-run stand off 136 deliveries after captain Mahela Jayawardene won his first toss of the series and elected to bat.

However, India fought back hard by taking four wickets in the space of six deliveries, including the run out of Dilshan in the 42nd over.

Rohit Sharma’s direct throw from point saw Dilshan short of his crease at the non-striker’s end, finishing a sparkling innings of 97 off 117 balls which featured nine fours.

Sri Lanka were cruising at 255-2 before sensationally losing four wickets for just one run.

Ishant Sharma (3-60) dismissed Thilina Kandamby, Chamara Kapugedera and Thilan Thushara while Jayawardene was brilliantly caught by diving Suresh Raina as Sri Lanka slumped to 256-6 in the 43rd over.

Maharoof (32) hit three boundaries and a six in his 23-ball knock as Sri Lanka took finished their innings and then the series with a flourish.

Sehwag Back In team After Injury

January 30th, 2009

Sehwag missed the first contest of the five-match series with an injured back. The opener has played in 196 one-dayers for his country, scoring over 6000 runs in the process.

“He is fit. He made way for a batsman in the first game and a batsman will miss out here,” Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni confirmed

India are currently 1-0 up in the series after taking a six wicket victory in Dambulla. However, Dhoni believes there is room for improvement.

“There are areas we need to work on. There is a scope for improvement, but a good sign is we are not relying on any individual to win matches,” he added.

“If one of our top four batsmen can stay at the crease till the end it will be good for others as their spinners are good and can make it tough for new batsmen.

“I think chasing anything over 250 will be difficult if the wicket behaves like it did the last time.”

Opposing captain Mahela Jayawardene was upbeat about his side’s performance in the first meeting, admitting he was content merely to compete with an in-form Indian team.

“I think they bowled pretty well. It was just that we did not put enough pressure on their batsmen. India did not have to take any risks,” he said.

“I am also quite happy with our batting effort. We have been getting high scores in the last few games, with the top-order batsmen among runs.

“We’ll try to keep India under pressure and there is no other motivation than to beat a side which is doing very well.”

The match could see spinner Muttiah Muralitharan become the highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket. He needs only two more scalps to overhaul Wasim Akram’s record of 502

India upstages Australia :Wasim Akram

December 3rd, 2008

Mahinder Singh Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s leadership has changed the face of Indian cricket, according to Pakistan’s pace legend Wasim Akram who believes it is a matter of time before India upstages Australia as the number one team in the world.

Akram said Dhoni has completely transformed the team ever since he took over the mantle of captaincy and that Indian cricket was on the right track with a number of talented players in their ranks.

“Dhoni has changed the face of Indian cricket, there is no doubt about that. He leads from the front, he has charisma and players like him. You can’t ask for anything more,” Akram said in a telephonic interview.

“He has given the team the confidence. The players now believe that they can go and beat any team and it is this confidence that has helped India to bring about the desired results,” the former Pakistan captain said.

Akram, regarded as one of the finest left-arm speedsters with 414 Test and 502 ODI wickets to his credit in a career spanning nearly 17 years, said Dhoni had also brought about a refreshing change in his attitude and approach to matches.

“It does not matter whether Sachin Tendulkar is resting or some other players are injured, the Indians are so confident that they go out and do the job. It was not the case about six or seven years ago, India did not have that confidence,” he observed.

“If the captain leads from the front, half the job is done. That is what I like about Dhoni. He is cool, comes out with few quotes and gets the best out of his players,” Akram said.

“Leading the Chennai team in the upcoming Champions League will be a good challenge for him since there will be a lot of international teams,” he said.

Asked whether India would be able to topple Australia as the number one team in the near future, Akram said “India is the new Australia. I think they are on the right track to achieve that”.

Akram also lavished praise on India’s new pace sensation Ishant Sharma saying the Delhi youngster had improved by leaps and bounds in the last few months.

“Ishant has been a revelation. He has really improved in the last few months and I think he is a real asset to India,” Akram said about the paceman who emerged as the man-of-the-series in the recent Test series against Australia.

“After the Australian tour late last year, his length was slightly short. But he has now rectified that and was simply brilliant in the recent series against Australia. The way he bowled, it seemed he had been around in Test cricket for five years or so,” he said.

The cricketer-turned-commentator said Ishant will only get better with time but also cautioned that the youngster needed to be handled well to prolong his career.

“He (Ishant) will get quicker and better with time, there is no doubt about it. He just has to keep himself fit as fast bowling is hard work,” Akram pointed out.

He said the Indian bowling line-up looked quite balanced at the moment and the presence of an in-form Zaheer Khan has provided a lot more sting.

“Zaheer has been fantastic. He has bowled the reverse swing well, got the ball to swing in and out… he has become a complete bowler now. He really provides that cutting edge to the attack,” he said.

“India always had good spinners but I am happy to see these pacemen developing. They are winning matches for India”, Akram said.

The ex-pacer said Harbhajan Singh was capable enough to shoulder the responsibility in the spin department following the retirement of champion leg spinner Anil Kumble.

“Harbhajan is a good spinner. It is now upto him to take upon the responsibility in the spin department. I think he is capable of doing it and also has the experience”.

Akram also credited India’s rise as a cricketing nation to the planning done by the BCCI over the last few years.

“Credit must also go the BCCI for India’s rise in recent times. They have planned and implemented everything well. The results have started coming now,” he added.

Dhoni Dreams to Lift the Trophy at Lords

June 24th, 2008

Mahendra singh Dhoni Twenty20 Kapil dev

Mahendra Dhoni would love nothing more than to emulate the feats of predecessor Kapil Dev and lead his country to World Cup glory at Lords and speaking ahead of the launch of the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup launch in London Dhoni said it would be a dream if he were to be lifting a trophy just as Kapil did when India won the World Cup proper at Lords in 1983.   Dhoni’s side are likely to be one of the favourites for the shorter version having won the inaugural 20-over version in South Africa last year of course I would love to do that said Dhoni but it is the team that makes a good captain and I like to distribute the pressure and responsibility around the whole team. It would be a dream to lift the trophy at Lords but I don’t want to look that far ahead and if it does happen it would be an all-round team effort. India’s triumph last year changed the attitude of their board to Twenty20 from one of apathy to rampant enthusiasm, with the creation of the cash-rich Indian Premier League IPL the most telling by product of the national side’s success.  Before the event last year no one really knew how it was going to work Dhoni said in a statement ahead of the tournament launch at The Oval. People said the players wouldn’t be taking it very seriously and it is true that at the start even the players were unsure about it. However he added It was a great tournament and a sweet moment when we won. It is one of the things I will cherish for the rest of my life and but the wicket-keeper said the rise in Twenty20 did not mean an end to Test cricket. Test cricket is very different and has its own place. I don’t see that changing and I am not worried about the future of Test cricket. People still see it as the top of the sport and it is so different from Twenty20 that I think it is safe. If there is one format that could suffer it is the 50-over game because it is more like Twenty20. It was brought in to make cricket quicker and more exciting but now Twenty20 has brought that to another level. It is over in three hours it is like a movie for the whole family to enjoy.

Dhoni Before The Home Series

June 13th, 2008

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Dhaka June 12 thanks to the thumping 140 run victory over Pakistan on Tuesday the clash with Bangladesh provides the team management an ideal opportunity to give some of the over worked squad members a break and give new faces a look in for Indias one day outfit involved in a long tri-series in Australia before the IPL rotation policy may be a good idea in lieu of the long season ahead. Some of them even played the home Tests against South Africa in energy sapping heat. Weather conditions in Dhaka are humid and future fixtures the Asia Cup in Pakistan and the tour of Sri Lanka will be equally taxing. A little bit of tinkering with team combination might be in everyones interest and 2 players who have strong cases for rest are young pace sensation Ishant Sharma and wicket keeper captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Ishant has been a precious addition to Indias fast bowling arsenal a rare fast bowler who can unsettle the batsman with pace and his value to the Test team is far greater than what he offers to the one day side. Ishant missed the first two Tests against South Africa because of injury but recovered for the third after which he played 13 out of 14 Twenty20 games for the Kolkata Knight Riders. During Indias Kitply Cup opener against Pakistan Ishant showed discomfort when his knee hit the ground after completing a catch. Perhaps deploying his skills in Tests and key 1 day fixtures is the way forward. Resting him once in a while will give newcomers like Manpreet Gony the chance to make it on the international circuit and the other player who seems in need of a break is Dhoni before the home series against South Africa began he had played 47 1 dayers 11 Tests and eight Twenty20s 105 days of international cricket in a span of 15 months. Since then he played all three Tests against South Africa and entire IPL though he did not keep wicket for the majority of the tournament because of a finger injury. However after the win against Pakistan on Tuesday Dhoni said the hectic playing schedule had to be accepted. It is part and parcel of our profession he said till you are fit you will love to play this game and you get addicted to it. For a cricketer no other addiction is bigger than playing cricket. Kirsten however said there is a longer plan. We are going to look at every player individually and see if there is an opportunity for him to be rested. It is a long year so we will look at opportunities through the year at this stage there is no plan from MSs side to rest. He is very keen to captain this one-day team and take it to more success. So there is nothing planned as yet. That Dhoni wasn’t keen on resting was evident from the squads chosen for the Kitply and Asia Cups. With Dinesh Karthik being dropped Dhoni is the only wicketkeeper in the squad which means he is likely to play each and every game and unless of course God forbid he picks up an injury..
