Yousuf lays into Malik

January 14th, 2009

Yousuf is no longer allowed to play in Pakistan after joining the controversial Indian Cricket League last year. He believes choosing Malik as captain over a number of senior players was not justified.

“It is perhaps for the first time in Pakistan cricket that a player who is not a certain choice in the Test and one-day team has been made captain,” Yousuf media on Wednesday.

Yousuf was named ICC Test player of the year in 2006 after setting the record for most Test runs in a calendar year. He said that he has no regrets about putting his international career on the line by joining the ICL.

“The way they dropped me from the Twenty20 team in 2007 without giving any reason or criteria for selecting players, I was hurt and disappointed,” Yousuf added.

“Our board needs to stop toeing the line of the Indian board. What have they done for us? They even refused to tour when we needed a series most.”

Yousuf revealed he stormed out of a training camp in Karachi before the Twenty20 World Cup in protest after learning that Malik would not select him.

“After so many years of service to Pakistan cricket I could not accept the humiliation and packed my bags and left camp,” he said.

Shoaib Malik dismisses claims of Yousuf

November 20th, 2008
Shoaib Malik

Pakistan cricket captain, Shoaib Malik has dismissed claims of his senior colleague Muhammad Yousuf that his manner was one of the factors which forced (Yousuf) to join Indian Cricket League (ICL).

“ It is not a pale decision on division of Yousuf as he is the senior most player of the squad and I always respected him and had his opinion on cricketing matters related to team “, he told media on Tuesday after influx of the team from Abu Dhabi where it won 3-0 a one day series against West Indies.

Shoaib said he always consulted senior players on team matters and valued their opinion and suggestions. “ I think Yousuf has given this statement without a fair and thorough analysis of the circumstances and it is his wrong thought and claim that he joined the ICL because of my attitude “, he added.

He said every cricketer is free to decide his fate or playing career and he is surprised to read Yousuf’s statement of joining ICL because of his attitude. “ I think it is smart way to make an excuse and I do not agree what he has said.”

Pakistan captain said under his leadership the team has showed good results in the past two years.

“ I am satisfied the way I have done as a captain and I am not bothered if I am not retained as a captain because I am enjoying playing cricket and I will do the same even as an ordinary member of the team”, he said.

“ I am very much satisfied that we have made some progress in our ranking, from sixth to fourth place in ODIs, and we must have this point under consideration that we had lesser opportunities to play international cricket in the past one year which led to cancellations of some events at home “, he said.

He said despite all these adverse circumstances he endeavored to justify in the role of a captain and gave his best as an all-rounder. “ If captaincy is a pride it also brings heavy responsibility and challenge and so far I have done my best to rise to the expectations”, he added.

Mohammad Yousuf Says PCB Destroying Local Game

November 17th, 2008

SUSPENDED batsman Mohammad Yousuf has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board for banning players competing in the non-sanctioned Indian Cricket League.

“Why are they ruining the future of Pakistan cricket?” Yousuf asked reporters.

“There are players in the ICL like Imran Farhat, Imran Nazir and Mohammad Sami, who can still play for Pakistan.”

Aside from suspending him, Yousuf is in dispute with the PCB over money as it is demanding he return $US124,000 ($194,000) it spent on the batsman’s legal case in India involving his contract negotiations with rival Twenty20 leagues.

“What I fail to understand is that the PCB is not worried about the future of Pakistan cricket and its players, it is only worried about the money,” Yousuf said.

The PCB suspends all Pakistan players who play in the ICL.

Abdul Razzaq, Rana Naved, Taufiq Umar and Hasan Raza are the other Pakistani cricketers who have been banned by the PCB for joining the rebel league.

Yousuf returned from India on Monday a day after his team Lahore Badshahs _ led by former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq _ defeated Hyderabad Heroes in the ICL final.

Yousuf, a veteran of 79 Tests and 269 one-day internationals, rejoined the ICL earlier this month, prompting the PCB to suspend him.

Yousuf signed for the ICL last year, but the PCB convinced him not to play in the rebel Twenty20 competition so that he could continue playing for the national team.

“The previous (cricket) board misguided me by saying that I could not play for Pakistan if I joined ICL,” Yousuf said.

He later tried to join the officially sanctioned Indian Premier League, a Twenty20 competition which is supported by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, but the ICL blocked the move by filing a breach of contract case in an Indian court.

Yousuf’s differences with the board and the team management began last year when he was dropped from the first Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa.

Yousuf, scorer of 6,770 runs in Test matches and 9,242 runs in one-day internationals, insisted he could still play all the three forms of the game for another two to three years.

“I am among the top in both Test and one-day cricket rankings (third and eighth respectively) so how can someone say I am not fit

Yousuf Blames To PCB, Malik For Move

November 9th, 2008

AN angry Mohammad Yousuf has blamed the attitude of Pakistan cricket authorities and captain Shoaib Malik for his move to the unofficial Indian league, denying he was motivated by money.

The 34-year-old was banned from all cricket in Pakistan after he joined the lucrative Indian Cricket League (ICL) on Wednesday
Yousuf said the attitude of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Malik pushed him towards the ICL.

“Everyone is saying that I have signed (up for) the ICL because of money but the real reason was the attitude of the PCB and Malik which forced me to join the league,” Yousuf told BBC Urdu radio in an interview from India.

Yousuf left for India on Monday, hours after being named in Pakistan’s squad to play three one-day internationals against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi.

The player had previously been left out of the side for a four-nation Twenty20 competition in Canada in October because of visa problems.

But he said that was not the whole story.

“I was told that my visa for Canada was delayed.

“In fact afterwards I got to know that my visa was applied (for) in a wrong manner and I was left out of the team and no one from the PCB bothered to talk to me,” he added.

“I am the senior most player and team’s best performer for the last several years but I was left out of the team.

“They don’t want me in the team so why not I join a league where I am welcomed?

“(The) captain never gave me the respect I deserved.”

Yousuf signed for the ICL in September last year after being left out of Pakistan’s Twenty20 World Cup squad.

The PCB managed to convince him to continue playing for the national side and return the ICL signing-on fee.

But he was lured back to the ICL once more after missing the Canada tournament.

“The PCB must give respect to the senior players and if they don’t, more and more senior players will leave for the ICL.

“That has been the case since last year,” said Yousuf.

The ICL authorities said they have dropped all the cases against Yousuf for breach of contract in 2007.

Yousuf said he still harbours hopes of playing for Pakistan.

“I know I still have three to four years of cricket left in me, so I can still play for Pakistan provided I am accepted by the PCB and my team-mates, especially the captain.”

Pakistan captain Malik refused to accept the blame - and harboured no grudge towards Yousuf.

“I don’t agree with his criticism.

“Respect is something that only God can give, not us,” Malik said.

“There was no communication gap.

“I’ve played with senior players like Inzamam and Yousuf my whole career. I have learnt a lot from them.

“I never felt Yousuf was upset over anything. In the domestic matches everything was normal. All senior players have been supportive.

“Yousuf didn’t play in the last match because I was told his wife was ill.”

Malik said he hoped young players, like all-rounder Fawad Alam, would fill the gap left by Yousuf in the West Indies series, which starts from Wednesday.

Mohammad Yousuf Joins ICL

November 4th, 2008

Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf has joined the unofficial Indian Cricket League (ICL), in a move that could jeopardise his international future.

He is now unlikely to play in the three one-dayers against the West Indies, the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Monday.

“His wife told us on the telephone that he has left for India today to play in the ICL,” PCB director of operations Zakir Khan said.

“But we will wait for facts and figures before taking any action against him.”

The PCB has a strict policy of interdiction all players who have joined the ICL - a Twenty20 league which is bankrolled by India’s largest media group, Zee television, and not recognised by world cricket’s governing body, the International Cricket Council.

Yousuf had been set to join the ICL when it was set up in 2007 after he was left out of the Pakistan squad for the World Twenty20 tournament.

But after talks with former PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf, he granted to forego the move and remain entitled for Pakistan. However, several former Pakistan players, including ex-skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq, all-rounders Abdul Razzaq and Azhar Mahmood, pacemen Shabbir Ahmed and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, and opener Imran Farhat, are still playing in the ICL and are thus disqualify from national selection by the PCB.

Yousuf left for New Delhi on Monday from Lahore just hours after he was named in a 15-strong Pakistan squad for the three-match one-day series against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi from 12-16 November.

“He did not inform us about his travel plans to India and we are trying to contact him directly,” Khan added.

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam, recently appointed to succeed Geoff Lawson, said the team has enough keep back players to trade Yousuf for the series in Abu Dhabi.

Opener Nasir Jamshed will have a fitness test before departing as he has just healthier.
