England undergo Denly damage fear

September 3rd, 2009

England batsman Joe Denly will undergo a scan on his left knee on Thursday after suffering an injury during England’s practice session prior to the first ODI against Australia at The Oval and is doubtful for the opening match of the series. Denly twisted his knee while playing football with his England team-mates in a warm-up session and was carried to the dressing room by team staff.

The injury was sustained as Denly toppled forwards following a collision with Owais Shah. His left leg caught in the turf as he lost balance, and after rolling on impact he took several moments before attempting to flex his knee, he had to be helped up the steep flight of steps to the dressing rooms by Russell and the team security advisor Reg Dickason.

Denly scored 67 from 111 balls in tough conditions on his ODI debut against Ireland last Thursday, and though he followed up with a golden duck in the first abandoned Twenty20 fixture at Old Trafford,

That place is now in serious doubt for Friday’s day-night fixture. The ECB confirmed that the injury had been looked at by the team medical staff, but a decision on a replacement is likely to be deferred until after the results of his scan.

Strauss said that the players went too hard on this occasion and the football warm-up would be reviewed. “The reason we’ve played football in the past is because … it’s a good way of getting the blood flowing we’ve felt that if it’s played sensibly the chances of anyone getting injured is slight,” he said. “If we’re honest and there is a chance of people getting injured then we’ll look at it.”

Lee Is Targeting The ODI Series Against Pakistan In April

February 16th, 2009

Australian fast bowler Brett Lee is recovering from his injury faster than expected and is set for an early comeback to international cricket in the one-day series against Pakistan in April.

Sidelined with stress fractures in his foot since early last month, 32-year-old Lee was initially expected to return in the World Twenty20 to be held in England in June.

But with his rehabilitation ahead of schedule, Lee is targeting the five-match one-day series against Pakistan in United Arab Emirates.

He is planning to run in the next fortnight and bowl by mid-March after having a surgical boot removed last week.

“The good news is the healing is two weeks ahead of schedule. There’s no need to rush Brett, but it looks like he will be available for selection for the Pakistan one-dayers, that’s the target,” Lee’s agent Neil Maxwell said.

“It’s better than where he should be and Brett is really pumped. The most encouraging sign is that he said to me the other day, ‘I’ve never been more excited about playing cricket’,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by ‘Sunday Telegraph’.

Should Lee not be available for the Pakistan series, he will be encouraged by Cricket Australia to play in the latter stages of the Indian Premier League.

CA physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Lee could benefit with a stint in the IPL, which concludes two weeks after the one-day series against Pakistan.

“Brett might play in the IPL because it might fit in with our time frame. We’d probably like him to play the latter part of the IPL because it will give him some cricket before he plays in the World Cup.

“He’s going really well. I saw him last week and he’s making good progress. At the moment, he’s doing a lot of strength work and he will be cleared to start running in a couple of weeks,” Kountouris said.

KARACHI: Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik said on Monday that series against Sri Lankan team would be stirring and Pakistani team would wrap up the home series.

Talking to newsmen here, captain Malik said that last 11 would be selected only after probing the arena conditions in the first one-day international. “We will pasture four fast bowlers if wicket has some bounce, otherwise, team will play with three pacers,” Malik said.

To a question, he said that team would be selected after consulting the coach and vice captain. “All players are in good form and they will try their level best to win the series against Islanders,” he added.

Jayawardene Plays Down Mendis Hype In Pakistan Series

January 19th, 2009

KARACHI: Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene Sunday refused to single out spin sensation Ajantha Mendis as the major threat for Pakistan in the one-day series.

The 23-year-old Mendis and his more illustrious partner Muttiah Muralitharan are tipped to hold the aces against the home team in the three-match series which starts here from Tuesday.

But Jayawardene said Mendis doesn’t carry extra burden of expectations.

Mendis, who made his debut in the West Indies in May last year, became the fastest bowler to get 50 wickets, achieving the total in 19 matches, breaking Indian Ajit Agarkar’s record of 23 matches.

Jayawardene said he would not like to put extra pressure on the newcomer.

Jayawardene refused to agree Sri Lanka are struggling with their overall form after losing to Bangladesh in the last league match and scrapping to a narrow two-wicket win in the final of the tri-series in Dhaka last week.

Chasing a modest 153, Sri Lanka lost their first five wickets for a mere six runs — the lowest total at the fall of five wickets in any one-day international — before Muralitharan’s 16-ball 33 saw them home.

Jayawardene admitted Pakistan are a dangerous team.

“Pakistan is always Pakistan for me. They are a very tough side whether they play regularly or not, so we will have to put up the best effort,” said Jayawardene.

The second match is here on Wednesday, while the final match is in Lahore on Saturday.

Kevin Pietersen is not interested in excuses

December 10th, 2008

Kevin Pietersen is not interested in excuses and the England captain expects his teammates to ignore all distractions and deliver the goods in the Test series against India.

The outcome of the series becomes almost irrelevant and few would criticise England even if they lose the Test series.

It’s a virtually win-win situation for the side after Pietersen and his men who grew in stature by defying terror and agreeing to continue the tour.

The England captain, however, is more interested in winning the series, rather than scoring brownie points.

“You could say we can’t lose in this situation, but that’s also a way of looking at things negatively and finding excuses - I don’t want any excuses about what has happened,” Pietersen said.

“There is to be no nonsense said about what has happened. I told the boys this morning that it’s a case of coming to this Test match series like it would be in England.

“We travelled on Monday, we’ll practise on Tuesday and Wednesday and play on Thursday. What has happened has happened and we can’t control it, but we’re in a very privileged position to be playing Test match cricket in India and we’ve got to deal with it in a professional manner,” the England captain was quoted as saying by the ‘Press Association’

With the 5-0 thrashing in the ODI series fresh in mind, winning would not be easy for the England side, more so especially in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks. Pietersen, however, is doing his best to get the focus back on the game.

“The main focus now is definitely on the Test series. It hasn’t been a great start to the winter, there’s been so much that’s happened in the last six weeks and it’s now a case of getting on and concentrating on the cricket.

“We need to chuck everything away that’s happened in that six weeks to make sure that now our primary goal and focus is to try and win this Test match series,” he said.

The heightened security around the team threatens to be another distraction but Pietersen said every individual would have to accept it and felt, from security point of view, the subsequent future tours would be no different.

“Whatever was said to us has happened. For the rest of my career, probably, that’s what’s going to happen now for future tours to the sub-continent - we’re just going to have to deal with it and play the cricket.

“It can be stifling to a certain degree, but our primary focus and goal now as international cricketers and sportsmen is to try and win a Test series. We’ve got to chuck everything away that’s happened, create this little bubble that we’ve got here and go and perform,” he asserted
