Shoaib Malik will lead Pakistan in sole T20 against Australia

February 1st, 2010

Shoaib malik has been appointed for the sole T20 match against Australia. earlier he was sacked by the PCB for poor leadership qualities but again as no choice left he has been appointed as captain. Shahid Afridi who is the t20 captain of Pakistan has been ban by ICC for tempering the ball.

Afridi, Pakistan’s stand-in captain, was caught by television cameras chewing the ball during Pakistan’s fifth and final One-day International against Australia at the WACA on Sunday night.

“Shoaib Malik has been appointed as captain for the Twenty-20 against Australia in the absence of Shahid Afridi,” PCB announced in a brief statement on Monday. Just a year ago, Malik was sacked as Pakistan captain after leading his team to an embarrassingly one-sided ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka on home soil last January.

At that time, Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam and manager Yawar Saeed described Malik as a ‘loner’ and recommended that he should be replaced with Younis Khan as captain.Younis did succeed Malik as captain but after leading Pakistan to a memorable title-winning triumph in the ICC World Twenty20 championship in England last summer, he decided against carrying on and stepped down as skipper last November. He was replaced by Yousuf, who led Pakistan on the twin tour of New Zealand and Australia.

While Pakistan have been pondering about having a new captain following Mohammad Yousuf’s poor captaincy in Australia, Malik was nowhere in the picture as far as the list of possible candidates was concerned.

However, with Yousuf and Younis not in the Twenty20 squad and Afridi ineligible for the tour-ending MCG clash against the Aussies, the PCB didn’t have many players to choose from.According to insiders in the Pakistan team, the name of Test vice-captain Kamran Akmal was considered but the fumbling glovesman was overlooked because of his poor showing on the tour of Australia.

The option of appointing opening batsman Salman Butt as captain was also discussed. Even Mohammad Asif, the fast bowler who briefly served as Pakistan’s vice-captain two years ago, got a mention but in the end the PCB think-tank voted in favour of Malik.

Ironically, Malik is quite a controversial figure within his team these days. There has been a whispering campaign in the national cricket circles suggesting that Malik could be the man leading a lobby in the Pakistan team that plotted the downfall of Yousuf in Australia. In fact, sources close to Yousuf claimed that the senior batsman suspects that some of the players including Malik deliberately under-performed in Australia where Pakistan lost the Test series 3-0 and the one-day series 5-0.

Javed Miandad

Karachi, Jan 28: Unhappy over Shoaib Malik’s unceremonious sacking from the post of captain, Javed Miandad today resigned as Director-General of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Sources in the PCB have confirmed that Miandad has resigned but it was not clear if his resignation has been accepted by the Board as PCB Chairman Ejaz Butt has left for Perth this morning to attend ICC’s Executive Board Meeting starting Saturday.

Miandad’s resignation comes less than 24 hours after emergency meetings with PCB officials and former and current players resulted in Younis Khan taking over the Pakistan captaincy from Malik.

Malik’s ouster came after Pakistan’s recent ODI series defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka.

Miandad, who served as Pakistan coach thrice in the past, took over the position of PCB Director-General in November last year.

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to appoint Younis Khan as captain of the national team after Pakistan’s humiliating defeat against Sri Lanka, said chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt.

He announced this while talking to media here at the PCB headquarters on Tuesday.

Ijaz Butt told that Shoaib Malik on the PCB request has stepped down from the captaincy after the debacle of the Pakistan cricket team in the recent home series.

Malik led Pakistan to their worst one-day defeat — by 234 runs — in the third and final one-day international in Lahore on Saturday which gave Sri Lanka a 2-1 series win.

“Malik has accepted to step down after the Sri Lanka defeat and we have appointed Younus as the new captain for an indefinite period,” Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt told reporters.

The one-sided defeat sparked a furious reaction in the cricket-mad country and the PCB asked the team management to give a report on the reasons for the heavy defeat.

The sports committee of the Senate also summoned Malik, coach Intikhab Alam and chief selector Abdul Qadir on February 9 to explain the defeat.

The 26-year-old Malik was appointed skipper after Pakistan’s first round exit from the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

Younus will take up the role in the two-Test home series against Sri Lanka next month.

Yousuf lays into Malik

January 14th, 2009
Mohammad Yousuf
Mohammad Yousuf

Yousuf is no longer allowed to play in Pakistan after joining the controversial Indian Cricket League last year. He believes choosing Malik as captain over a number of senior players was not justified.

“It is perhaps for the first time in Pakistan cricket that a player who is not a certain choice in the Test and one-day team has been made captain,” Yousuf media on Wednesday.

Yousuf was named ICC Test player of the year in 2006 after setting the record for most Test runs in a calendar year. He said that he has no regrets about putting his international career on the line by joining the ICL.

“The way they dropped me from the Twenty20 team in 2007 without giving any reason or criteria for selecting players, I was hurt and disappointed,” Yousuf added.

“Our board needs to stop toeing the line of the Indian board. What have they done for us? They even refused to tour when we needed a series most.”

Yousuf revealed he stormed out of a training camp in Karachi before the Twenty20 World Cup in protest after learning that Malik would not select him.

“After so many years of service to Pakistan cricket I could not accept the humiliation and packed my bags and left camp,” he said.

We’ll adopt strategy to master Mendis: Shoaib Malik

December 22nd, 2008
Shoaib Malik
Shoaib Malik

KARACHI: Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik said Sunday his team were disappointed about India’s cancellation of a much-anticipated tour here but were keen to face “tough” replacements Sri Lanka.

India last week pulled out of their January tour of Pakistan over the Mumbai attacks, forcing the hosts to arrange a stop-gap series with Sri Lanka.

“We are disappointed that India decided not to tour us,” Malik told reporters. “India has been doing well so it would have been a good series, but Sri Lanka is also a good team and we are ready for them.”

“When India and Pakistan play each other, there is huge public interest in both countries, but that will now not come about,” he added.

Sri Lanka have agreed to a tour that will include three Tests, three one-dayers and a Twenty20 match. The tour is expected to begin after Sri Lanka complete a tour of Bangladesh on January 16.

Shoaib Malik, who was appointed captain last year, said his team would have to play its best cricket to defeat Sri Lanka.

“We have not been playing much international cricket so we have to do a lot of hard work, while Sri Lanka have been doing well at the international level and will be tough opponents,” he said.

Malik said he hoped more international teams would follow in Sri Lanka’s footsteps.

“Their visit will give us some good cricket and hopefully more teams will come to Pakistan in the future,” he said.

Malik singled out sensational Sri Lankan spinner Ajantah Mendis as his team’s main challenge.

“Sri Lanka have two quality spinners in Muttiah Muralitharan and Mendis, but we have played Murali a number of times and now need to master Mendis, who has been doing very well,”the Captain said.

Malik eyes Champ League to convince India

November 27th, 2008
Shoaib Malik
Shoaib Malik

Shoaib Malik has said he would use his visit to India for the Twenty20 Champions League to convince Indian players to tour Pakistan for the Test series early next year.

The Pakistan skipper told reporters in Lahore on Tuesday that he was convinced that conditions were conducive for India to tour Pakistan in January-February and play their series as per schedule.

Malik will be leading the Sialkot Stallions in the Champions League in India next month and said this would give him a good opportunity to exchange views with the Indian players, media and even officials.

“I will do my best to convince them it is safe to tour Pakistan. I will let them know how important it is for India to tour Pakistan on schedule,” he said.

Malik said his Sialkot team was preparing hard for the USD four million Champions League and were confident about their chances against the champion Twenty20 sides from the Indian Premier League, Australia, England and South Africa.

“We have prepared hard and well for the tournament and we have some good players so we do fancy our chances of doing well,” he said.

He said the fact that Sialkot had done well in Pakistan’s domestic Twenty20 competition and won it thrice had added to the confidence of the players.

Sialkot will miss the services of Imran Nazir, Rana Naved and Mohammad Asif for various reasons in the Champions League. While Nazir and Naved have signed up for the Indian Cricket League and can’t play for Sialkot, Asif is presently suspended by the Pakistan board over a doping offence.

Malik said India’s tour to Pakistan would help revive the sport in the country after a troubled year for the country’s cricket.

“The Indians have to realise what this tour means to us. It can be played at neutral venues but the impact of India being in Pakistan is very very important for us as a country, Malik added.

Shoaib Malik dismisses claims of Yousuf

November 20th, 2008

Shoaib Malik

Pakistan cricket captain, Shoaib Malik has dismissed claims of his senior colleague Muhammad Yousuf that his manner was one of the factors which forced (Yousuf) to join Indian Cricket League (ICL).

“ It is not a pale decision on division of Yousuf as he is the senior most player of the squad and I always respected him and had his opinion on cricketing matters related to team “, he told media on Tuesday after influx of the team from Abu Dhabi where it won 3-0 a one day series against West Indies.

Shoaib said he always consulted senior players on team matters and valued their opinion and suggestions. “ I think Yousuf has given this statement without a fair and thorough analysis of the circumstances and it is his wrong thought and claim that he joined the ICL because of my attitude “, he added.

He said every cricketer is free to decide his fate or playing career and he is surprised to read Yousuf’s statement of joining ICL because of his attitude. “ I think it is smart way to make an excuse and I do not agree what he has said.”

Pakistan captain said under his leadership the team has showed good results in the past two years.

“ I am satisfied the way I have done as a captain and I am not bothered if I am not retained as a captain because I am enjoying playing cricket and I will do the same even as an ordinary member of the team”, he said.

“ I am very much satisfied that we have made some progress in our ranking, from sixth to fourth place in ODIs, and we must have this point under consideration that we had lesser opportunities to play international cricket in the past one year which led to cancellations of some events at home “, he said.

He said despite all these adverse circumstances he endeavored to justify in the role of a captain and gave his best as an all-rounder. “ If captaincy is a pride it also brings heavy responsibility and challenge and so far I have done my best to rise to the expectations”, he added.
