Kallis helps S Africa win series

November 6th, 2008

South Africa wrapped up a comfortable seven-wicket win over Kenya to win their one-day international series 2-0.

After winning the toss, Kenya batted better than in the first game, with opener Seren Waters hitting 74.

Albie Morkel took 3-47 as the Kenyans - who had been skittled for 177 on Friday - posted a respectable total of 222-9.

But Jacques Kallis hit an unbeaten 92 as the Proteas cruised past their target, adding 118 with Hashim Amla (78) and 59 with AB de Villiers (28).

Waters, 18, attended Cranleigh School in England, played for Surrey 2nd XI this season and was England-qualified before he was called up by Kenya last month.

His first ODI half-century included nine fours and a six, but when he was bowled by Morkel, the visitors had reached 151-3 in the 36th over. Thomas Odoyo (32) and Jimmy Kamande (29) helped push the score past 200 - as did 11 wides - while seamer Johann Louw took 1-53 from his 10 overs on his ODI debut.

Spinners Johan Botha and JP Duminy, who had shared seven wickets between them in the first match in Bloemfontein, both went wicketless.

Paceman Monde Zondeki took 2-40 after being warned twice for running on the pitch during his opening spell.

Nehemiah Odhiambo struck early for Kenya when he had Herschelle Gibbs brilliantly caught by Waters at mid-wicket in the fourth over, but Amla, Kallis and eventually de Villiers piled on the runs.

Amla, who hit 13 fours, was named as man of the match for his 78 off 76 balls.

And it was Kallis - whose 92 came off 94 balls - who sealed the victory with a huge six over the mid-wicket fence to win it for the Proteas with 27 balls to spare.

“There were a lot of positives to take forward,” South Africa coach Mickey Arthur said.

“At the same time, each and every one of us has plenty of room for further improvement and it would be silly not to acknowledge that.”

South Africa now host Bangladesh in a Twenty20 international on Wednesday, with three one-dayers and two Tests to follow.

The bad Time for Dale Steyn

July 25th, 2008

 South Africa, Dale Steyn, Injured

South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn who has a broken left thumb, will miss the third Test and is doubtful for the fourth Test against England team manager Mohammed Mossajee said on Friday. Steyn sustained the injury while fielding a ball that was driven back to him off his own bowling during the second test at Headingley on Monday. The injury was only x-rayed on Thursday. Dale has sustained a fracture on the base of his left thumb and will see an orthopaedic surgeon to have a cast put on and it will be on for between two and three weeks then we will take another x-ray and take a decision from there Moosajee told reporters at Worcester where South Africa were playing Bangladesh A and if it doesn`t heal in time he may miss the fourth Test at The Oval starting Aug 7 but we are giving ourselves a window for him to be re-assessed in two weeks. The risk for Edgbaston was that if he played he might have done further damage and then needed surgery and Andre Nel or Monde Zondeki will come in for Steyn who claimed seven wickets in the second Test. Coach Mickey Arthur said he was confident that the strength in depth in the squad would allow South Africa to adequately replace Steyn. Missing a player of Dales calibre is a huge blow Arthur said, but I feel we have such good depth with the likes of Andre Nel and Monde. Nel is probably next in the queue. That was why I was strong on wanting good reserve strength with experienced players who know about the intensity of Test cricket and Spinner Paul Harris was cleared to play in the match at Worcester after he had an x-ray on an elbow injury after slipping in the bathroom in his hotel room. He suffered minor ligament damage but not enough to prevent him bowling. South Africa have a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. The 3rd Test starts on Wednesday.

South African bowlers destroyed Indian batting

April 3rd, 2008

The Indian first innings of second test match showed an irresponsible batting agaist South africa as all the credit goes to Soth african bowlers. Anil Kumle won the toss and decided to bat first on a grassy track which Ntini and Steyn took full advantage and destroyed the Indian batting from top to down with only Irfan Pathan manage to score 21 as highest.

Soth african batsmen also took advantage of the situation and manage to take a lead of 147 runs while Devilliers and Kallis were not out at the crease at the end of the day one of the second test match. it seems that South africa will manege to take more than 300 runs lead and the test match will be out of Indian batsmen hands. Still it is a game of cricket. Now Indian really needs a spirit to safe this match, a spirit which they showed in Australia.
