Australia ride on Pakistan nerves to clinch the lost match

January 6th, 2010

The brilliant cricket displayed ended in few hours when Australia bowled out Pakistan in a chase of only 175 runs. This was the golden chance which Pakistan missed it. Pakistan got oppurtunity to level the series by winning this match, at one point it seemed to be the big margin victory but later it turned other way and success kissed Australia leaving behind Pakistan hopes.

A ninth wicket partnership also turned this week’s match. Australia led by 51 runs when Peter Siddle joined Mike Hussey at the wicket. They added 123, Hussey completing an innings of 134 not out, to leave Pakistan what still looked an extremely modest target of 175.

Pakistan was all out for 138 after it collapsed against spinner Nathan Hauritz, who took five wickets.

This was a still more remarkable reversal, and consequently even more shattering for Pakistan, than Watkins’ single day of glory. That was the final defeat of a series already lost. Victory on Wednesday would have tied the current series at 1-1 with the decider at Hobart, starting Jan. 14, still to come. Instead Pakistan goes to Tasmania with the series lost and its run of consecutive defeats by Australia extended to 11.

Pakistan dominated this week’s match from the start. Mohammad Sami, a bowler recalled after a two-year absence, blew away Australia’s first three batsmen for 10 runs. It looked like a remarkable piece of redemption. If Watkins is a candidate for the worst test bowler of the last 50 years, Sami leads a parallel category — least successful bowler talented enough to win frequent recalls. His 84 wickets in 34 tests have cost more than 50 runs apiece, the worst average of any bowler who has taken more than 50 test wickets.

Australia was bowled out for 127 with Mohammad Asif, who has a vastly superior record but is another candidate for redemption after a series of drug-related infractions, taking six wickets.

When Pakistan replied with 333 in its first innings victory appeared certain. Shane Watson’s defiant 97 when Australia batted again seemed merely to be delaying of the inevitable, and the latest landmark for a fast-rising talent with a propensity for falling in just short of a century — this was his fourth score between 89 and 97 in his last four matches.

Aussie still good enough for Windies

December 19th, 2009

Australia wrap up the series after a test match thriller at WACA. There was just need of one wicket to finish off the Test and series, Bollinger had Kemar Roach caught behind for 17 to clinch the series. Roach referred umpire Billy Bowden’s decision to the third umpire. Replays and hot spot appeared to indicate Roach did not hit the ball but the original call was upheld.

Gavin Tonge finished unbeaten on 23 while Bollinger returned match figures of 8 for 141 after his five-wicket haul in West Indies’ first innings.

West Indies skipper Chris Gayle was named man-of-the-match for his spectacular 70-ball century late on day two, the fifth fastest ton in Test cricket.

The big-hitting Jamaican was also named man-of-the-series after scoring 346 runs at an average of 69.20, including two hundreds.

Gayle said while the overall result was slightly disappointing he was proud of the way his side continued to battle.

“Hopefully we can continue to go from strength to strength - we have the talent,” he said at the awards ceremony.

“I’m sure in the future we can beat the number four team, even the number one team.

“Next time around we will be back and I’m sure we will put up a better fight.”

West Indies set 330 to chase for Australia

December 7th, 2009

West Indies have set Australia 330 runs to chase on the last day in the second cricket Test at Adelaide Oval. Thanks to Chris Gayle who was not out at 165 and carried the bat.

The West Indies batsmen added 33 runs in the first partial half on the final day before losing the last two wickets to be all out for 317, leaving Australia about 80 overs to play and chase.

Captain Chris Gayle remained unbeaten on 165 - the only West Indian skipper to carry his bat in a Test innings.

Australian quick Mitchell Johnson claimed five wickets for the innings and fellow paceman Doug Bollinger finished with 3-50.

The Windies resumed on 8-284 and Johnson (5-103) struck first on the last day by bowling Ravi Rampaul for 14.

No.11 Kemar Roach was the final batsman dismissed, caught by Ricky Ponting at slip from Bollinger’s bowling for eight.

Australia must defy a century of history to triumph, with no team scoring more than 239 runs in a fourth winnings to win an Adelaide Oval Test in more than 100 years.

The delicately balanced second Test was threatened by heavy morning and overnight rain in Adelaide, but the showers halted before play and the weather bureau has forecast the rain to clear during the day.

The Australians lead one-nil in the three Test series with the final match to be played in Perth from December 16.

Sehwag missed out third tripple century but power India

December 4th, 2009

Virender Sehwag missed out with a little margin to be the first three-time triple centurion in the history of Test cricket but his career is on and can do this at other occasion too.

He is still in the members of two triple hundred scorers along with Don Bradman  and his now-retired great  Brian Lara. The latter also holds the record for the highest score of 400 which can be break at any time the way cricket wickets are being preapared.

But Sehwag scores runs in a manner no one can. The top three scores for India belong to him. Originally known as only the Sachin Tendulkar clone, Sehwag has carved a unique identity of his own.

Incidentally, the top 10 fastest double hundreds also has Sehwag written all over the list with his name appearing five times!

Sehwag has two triple hundreds and four double tons in 72 Tests, less than half of Tendulkar. Needless to say when he bats like that, India is in a nice position of authority to press for a win like they are against Sri Lanka.

India gain a super normal lead in the first test which is above 350 and put Srilanka far behind to chase this and in a good position to win this match with an innings along with wrapping the series with a hope of becomming top nation in test ranking. It was Dhoni after Sehwag who dent Lankans. Srilanka is far behind and at the close of the game on third day, they were 11 for none and two days remaining.

Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma was named man of the series. Matthew Hayden alone sustained his team’s slim hopes with a bold 77.
Off spinner Harbhajan Singh was the highest wicket-taker with 4 for 64, while leg spinner Amit Mishra (3 for 27) and Sharma (2 for 31) provided valuable support.

India record win put it at top in the series

October 21st, 2008

Virender Sehwag had predicted on the morning of day five that he expected his team to wrap up the Australian innings in the session between lunch and tea. Even in his wildest of dreams he wouldn’t have imagined the way in which the Australians, left facing an improbable 90 overs to save the game, or left to chase an improbable 375 runs to win the Test, caved in, to hand India a massive 320 run win – their biggest in Test history.

Australia began through their overnight batsmen Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin, who had batted out 29.3 overs on day four. However, the pair were separated four minutes into the final day, when Zaheer Khan set up Haddin nicely by bowling two outswingers, and then got one to jog back in, which sneaked through in the gap between bat and pad and crash into middle stump.

The 84-run stand was broken, just as India would have liked, in the very first over of the morning.

Cameron White, the batting allrounder in the Australian line up, walked out to bat, and he chose to play an expansive cover drive to the second ball he faced, only that it was a little too early in his innings, and that Zaheer Khan, with his tail up, had bowled one full, wide and got it to move away, enough to take the outside edge and carry to MS Dhoni, who dived to his right and came up with the ball.

Brett Lee received yet another beauty first up; Zaheer landed one on the middle stump and got it to move away. Lee played down the wrong line, and the late movement hit the off stump to complete a miserable match for Lee.

Michael Clarke meanwhile brought up his first fifty on tour; Clarke, who had a best of 36* previously on this tour, justified being tagged Australia’s best player of spin. He was absolutely in control when playing both Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra, and knocked the ball around and picked up runs with ease.

After the early carnage, where he saw his team lose three wickets for two runs, Clarke found an able ally in Mitchell Johnson, and together, they went about delaying the inevitable.

Ganguly efforts manage to cross South african total

April 12th, 2008

The thrird test match between Indian and South africa is balance at the moment.  Neither side is in a situation to claim the victory. Graham Smith side batted first and posted 265 in their first innings while the host India scored 288 for 9 in their first innings, a slim lead does not post any threat sofar to visitors. Thanks to Ganguly who played an exclusive innings to put India in a respectable position otherwise the India may not able to cross the 265 mark.

The match is in an intresting situation, the either side can dominate the opponent with their brilliance. If the South African manage to give a target of 300 plus then chasing this moderate figure will be a bit difficult for the host India because the factor of wear and tear in the pitch.

If India will manage to win this match then the series will be levelled as South Africa is leading the series by 1-0.
